Indians losing streak reaches seven
By Justice B. Hill / MLB.com

CLEVELAND -- Combine a lack of offensive production Tuesday with slapdash defense and ineffective pitching, and Indians ended up matching their longest losing streak since July 1991.
Loss No. 7 came to the Anaheim Angels, 10-1, in front of 16,667 fans at Jacobs Field.

But unlike some of the other seven losses, the Indians didn't get the kind of starting pitching they had been able to count on in past games. Right-hander Ricardo Rodriguez, ordinarily reliable, authored his worst outing of the season.

"I don't think it was anything in particular," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "He just couldn't command his pitches."

Wedge would be right in that view. His rookie right-hander gave up six runs in five innings, although two of those runs weren't all Rodriguez's fault. They scored in the second inning after Casey Blake's throwing error.

His error led directly to one run; it also set the Angels up for a second run, which scored on Jeff Davanon's sacrifice fly.
One inning later, Rodriguez gave up two more runs. Blame for those go directly to him.

With a runner on first base, he fed Garret Anderson a pitch too fat to miss, and Anderson, hitting .359 at game time, did what all good hitters do with fat pitches: He put the meat of the bat to it.

His homer gave Anaheim starter Ramon Ortiz a 4-0 lead. Ortiz gave one of those runs back in the bottom of the fourth on Ellis Burks' homer. But in the top of the fifth -- the Angels -- a team with its own struggles this season, banged Rodriguez around a bit more, building their lead to 6-1.

While he finished the fifth, Rodriguez wouldn't return for the sixth. His 86-pitch night had ended with a pitching line that read: six runs (four earned) and eight hits. He saw his ERA jump from 2.73 to 3.32.

"The pitches weren't working the way I wanted," Rodriguez said. "It was a bad day."

Against the Angels, Rodriguez couldn't afford a "bad day." He needed to be much sharper than these totals to make up for the punchless offense behind him. The Indians offense accomplished little against Ortiz, who didn't find himself in any real jams from start to finish.

But the way the Angels were raining runs, Ortiz (4-2, 4.38 ERA) didn't have to be nearly as sharp as he was. And his teammates continued to pour on the offense, much to the Tribe's frustration.

"It's nobody's fault but our own," said Indians catcher Josh Bard, critiquing loss No. 7. "It's not the staff's fault or anybody else's fault, except for the players. You've gotta start doing a better job, 'cause we can't go out there and play like that."

Reliever Aaron Myette, 10 days removed from the disabled list, was the victim of Anaheim's second wave of scoring. In 1 2/3 innings, Myette proved less effective than Rodriguez had been.

By the time Myette came on, the Indians were simply looking for someone to eat innings. Myette didn't do that well -- at least not well enough to keep this game from turning into Tribe's worst loss of the season.

Indians lose to champs again
By Todd Lorenz / MLB.com

CLEVELAND -- Brian Anderson should have had Karma on his side after his much-publicized apprehension of a teen-aged purse thief last week during the Cleveland Indians' series in Oakland.
Anderson was returning to the mound after being skipped twice because of a strained right groin and he and teammate Brian Sadler chased down the would-be thief last Saturday.

"I don't foresee any problems with Brian, seeing as he ran down the street about 1000 mph," Indians manager Eric Wedge said prior to the game. "I think he's pretty convinced that he's ok."

His recent good deeds behind him, a solid outing would have been have been a perfect finish to Anderson's mini-saga of heroism. But it wasn't to be as the Cleveland southpaw was knocked around in a 6-2 loss to the Anaheim Angels in front of 15,761 fans at Jacobs Field.

"It wasn't the layoff," Anderson explained. "It was me just not closing out innings. Five of the six runs came with two outs. That's inexcusable. If I get those hitters out, it's a different ballgame."

Things started off well enough for Anderson. He tossed a scoreless first inning, but fell behind in the second after giving up a leadoff single to Troy Glaus and an RBI double to Shawn Wooten, who later scored the first of Anaheim's two-out runs on a single by Eric Owens.

The Indians had a golden opportunity to get the runs back for their pitcher in the bottom half of the second off Jarrod Washburn.

Casey Blake started the Tribe's only real scoring threat when he was plunked by Washburn with one out and took third on Jody Gerut's double into the right-field corner.

Catcher Josh Bard followed with a sharp grounder to third that failed to advance the runners before Travis Hafner loaded the bases by drawing a walk on a 3-2 pitch out of the strike zone.

As has been the case during the Indians' losing streak, now at a season-high eight games, they couldn't come up with a crucial two-out hit. Brandon Phillips hit a weak grounder to the right side as Washburn (2-3) escaped the inning unscathed.

"Those are opportunities that we have to take advantage of," Wedge said. "When we start coming through in those situations is when we'll start to turn some games around."

The Indians are 2-for-21 with the bases loaded this season and 3-for-40 with runners in scoring position over their last seven games.

As the Indians struggled to mount a threat against Washburn, the Angels used the longball against Anderson.

Bengie Molina gave the Angels a 4-0 lead with a two-run homer in the fourth and Brad Fullmer added another pair with his two-run shot in the sixth. Both came with two outs.

"There were just too many two-out hits," Anderson said. "That's what good teams do and I wasn't good enough to stop them from doing it tonight. That's all that needs to be said."

Anderson finished the day allowing six runs on 10 hits while fanning one in six frames. The loss drops his record to 2-3 while boosting his ERA from 3.51 to 4.55.

"I had an opportunity to stop a losing streak tonight and I fumbled it away," said Anderson. "I was disgusted with myself for putting us in a hole. That's not the way to go about stopping a losing streak."

As the Indians continue down the path of their worst start since 1969, there were at least a few bright spots. Struggling outfielder Matt Lawton followed Tuesday's two-hit performance by jacking a too-little-too-late two run homer in the bottom of the eighth.

"That was the best ball he's hit all year," Wedge said of the home run. "Hopefully that will help get him jumpstarted a little bit."

Closer Danys Baez, also in need of a power boost, took a step in the right direction by pitching a scoreless ninth -- although he did allow two hits.

The Indians will try to avoid being swept tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. when Jason Davis (2-3, 6.67 ERA) takes the hill against Anaheim's Scot Shields (1-0, 0.77 ERA).

GAME DAY RECAP Thursday, May 01
ANAHEIM AT CLEVELAND, POSTPONED (RAIN)

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- The final contest of a three-game midweek series between the Anaheim Angels and Cleveland Indians was postponed on Thursday night due to heavy rain.

A makeup date has not been announced, but it is likely to occur as part of a doubleheader when the Angels are next in Cleveland, from August 8-10.

Cleveland was hoping to end an eight-game losing streak - its longest since 1990 - while Anaheim was trying to cap its first three-game sweep here since August 4-6, 2000.

The Indians host the Texas Rangers on Friday while the Angels visit the Toronto Blue Jays.
