Jimmy Anderson pitched one of his better games and the Pirates received help from unlikely source. Anderson took a shutout into the ninth inning, and Keith Osik snapped a scoreless tie with an RBI single in the ninth as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 Sunday.
Osik, started in a game for the first time since July 8. Osik came into the contest hitting just .152. Osik was also battling a bad slump going just 3-for-36 slump before his go-ahead hit off Mike Timlin (3-5). Osik came through after being hit in the head by a back swing from Edgar Renteria in the bottom of the eighth.
The Pirates took two of three from the Cardinals; however, the Pirates have won just two of their last 14 games against St. Louis.
Anderson (6-9) won for only the second time in seven starts, departing after Albert Pujols' leadoff double in the ninth. Anderson allowed six hits. Mike Williams got the last three outs for his 20th save in 22 chances.
Anderson had to pitch out of trouble in the eighth after Mike Matheny and Kerry Robinson led off the inning with hits. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runners, Anderson got Renteria on a popup and Placido Polanco on a grounder to end the threat.
Darryl Kile pitched eight scoreless innings for the Cardinals but ended up with a no-decision.
John Vander Wal doubled leading off the ninth for Pittsburgh. Pinch-runner Tike Redman advanced on a groundout and scored on Osik's hit to center. Osik advanced to second when the ball rolled under Robinson's glove for an error.
With runners on first and second and two outs, Jack Wilson hit a grounder to Renteria at shortstop. Renteria's throw to second was wild, allowing Osik to score on the error. Mark McGwire was 0-for-3, dropping his average to .194.
The game was delayed by rain for 32 minutes in the bottom of the first. Kile's last start on Tuesday also had a rain delay of 1 hour, 17 minutes. ... Kile is 6-3 with a 2.21 ERA at Busch Stadium. ...
