Offerman Joins Independent League
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Former major leaguer Jose Offerman signed with the Bridgeport Bluefish of the independent Atlantic League.
The 34-year-old Offerman was released by the Montreal Expos on the final day of spring training. He played for Boston and Seattle last year.
A two-time All-Star, Offerman was a .274 career hitter in the majors. He was the Los Angeles Dodgers' starting shortstop in 1992. He started at second base for Kansas City from 1996-98, then was an infielder and designated hitter for the Red Sox from 1999-02.
"Offerman will add tremendous experience and versatility to our lineup,'' Bluefish general manager Charlie Dowd said. "We hope the Bluefish and the Atlantic League can help facilitate his return to the major leagues.''
Offerman has 1,483 hits, 53 homers and 502 RBI in 1,488 games.
He is the second former major leaguer to play for the Bluefish, after Mariano Duncan.
