Orioles looking to avoid sweep
Detroit (6-25) at Baltimore (16-16), 3:05 p.m. ET
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles initially looked at this series against Detroit as a chance to distance themselves from the .500 mark. Now, they are just trying to avoid getting swept. The Tigers have come into Camden Yards and simply outplayed the Orioles, getting two good pitching performances from Nate Cornejo and Mike Maroth.
Omar Daal gets the ball for Baltimore on Wednesday. The left-hander is coming off seven solid inning last week at Comerica Park. He has put together two consecutive positive starts after a shaky beginning to the season.
The Orioles' offense broke out of a slump Tuesday with six runs. The team had scored eight runs in its previous four games. David Segui is just 1-for-15 since returning from the disabled list, lowering his average to .347.
The O's have won 14 of their past 24 games and try to head out on the road one game above .500. They are 1-4 against Kansas City and Detroit so far this homestand. Baltimore will open a seven-game road trip to Kansas City and Chicago after this series.

Players to watch: Deivi Cruz is struggling more than anyone on the Orioles' roster and is showing no signs of snapping out of it. He is hitting .167 after an 0-for-3 night Tuesday and could be benched soon in favor of Melvin Mora.
Quotable: "You never want to get swept, especially a home. But I would hate to call it a must-win." -- Orioles second baseman Jerry Hairston on Wednesday's series finale.
