Helling, O's to play Royals
Baltimore (16-17) at Kansas City (20-11), 8:05 p.m. ET

BALTIMORE -- The Orioles thought they might be heading to Kansas City on a hot streak after three games against the struggling Detroit Tigers. But they were the ones swept and now must try to snap a four-game losing streak against the best home team in the Major Leagues.
Rick Helling gets the start for Baltimore as it opens a four-game set against the Royals on Thursday. Helling pitched five scoreless innings Friday before allowing four runs in the sixth inning and getting his third loss.
Helling has a 5.86 ERA and has been susceptible to the big inning, and he doesn't exactly have a blazing offense to support him. The Orioles are hitting .238 in their past seven games and left 13 runners on past in their past two games against the Tigers. Last week against the Royals, the Orioles dropped two of three, getting shut down by Thursday's starter, Miguel Asencio, and lefty Chris George.
The Orioles are still in third place in the American League East, though the Toronto Blue Jays are coming fast. They will play three more against the Royals after Thursday and then finish the trip with three against the White Sox. Catcher Brook Fordyce, on bereavement leave because of his father's death, will rejoin the team Sunday night in Chicago.

Players to watch: Helling needs to deliver a quality start because he hasn't quite lived up to the team's expectations.
Quotable: "They have always had the guys to score runs. Now they seem like they have the pitching. There's no reason to believe they can't compete." --Orioles manager Mike Hargrove on the Royals.
