Orioles, Royals game postponed
Teams to play doubleheader Friday
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com
KANSAS CITY -- The Orioles' Thursday night game with the Kansas City Royals was postponed because of rain and tornado warnings in the eastern Kansas and western Missouri areas.
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader Friday with the first game beginning at 5:05 p.m. (ET). Game two will start about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Some fans had shown up at Kauffman Stadium but a tarp covered the field a majority of the time and the players never began warming up.
It appeared as if play were going to begin as the groundskeepers briefly took off the tarp, but when the tornado hit nearby Lawrence, Kan., the game was called.
Rick Helling, Thursday's scheduled starter, will go in game one for the Orioles, while Friday's scheduled starter Sidney Ponson will go in game two.
Helling will pitch Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox on a normal four days' rest instead of five. He faced the Royals last Friday, allowing four runs in 5 2/3 innings in the loss.
