Orioles 15, Royals 5
May 9, 2003
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Baltimore Orioles sure know how to break a losing streak.
Tony Batista homered and matched his career high with five RBIs as the Orioles ended a four-game losing streak with a 15-5 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the first game of a doubleheader.
``We'll take it,'' Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove said. ``You don't expect that to happen against a team like the Royals. We'll take what we can get.''
Every Orioles starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run. Baltimore had its highest scoring game since beating Tampa Bay 15-6 on April 11, 2002, and a season high with 17 hits.
Jay Gibbons had his first four-hit game of the season with two doubles and two singles.
Rick Helling (2-3) gave up three runs and eight hits in seven innings, walking three and striking out two.
``I was trying to throw as many strikes as possible to get the guys off the field,'' Helling said. ``When you get that big of a lead, it's nice to go out there and make guys hit it.''
Miguel Asencio (2-1) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in six innings. Reliever Albie Lopez gave up seven runs in 1 1-3 innings.
``The numbers didn't look the same way as (Asencio) threw the ball. He threw the ball real well,'' Kansas City manager Tony Pena said. ``He made some good pitches.
``I know Albie is struggling right now. He has to battle through. I haven't seen anything that he's doing wrong right now, other than working behind hitters.''
The game was a makeup of Thursday's game that was postponed because of tornado warnings in the Kansas City area.
The Orioles jumped on Asencio with five runs in the third inning. Deivi Cruz led off with a single, followed by a walk to Geronimo Gil. Jerry Hairston sacrificed the runners to second and third and Gary Matthews drove in the first run on a groundout. David Segui then hit an RBI triple.
Jeff Conine walked and Gibbons drove in Segui with a single. Conine and Gibbons advanced another base as the ball eluded right fielder Desi Relaford. Both runners then scored on Batista's single just out of the reach of shortstop Angel Berroa.
Kansas City answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when Michael Tucker tripled and scored on Berroa's single.
Segui lined the first pitch of the fifth inning over the left field fence to give the Orioles a 6-1 lead. Baltimore added two more runs in the sixth off Asencio.
Batista hit a two-run homer in the seventh and added an RBI single in a five-run eighth off Lopez.
Dee Brown hit a two-run homer in the ninth for Kansas City.
Notes
Batista reached five RBIs for the third time in his career and the second time against Kansas City. The other time was April 27, 2002, in Kansas City. ... In his last five outings, Lopez has given up 15 runs on 18 hits in 5 2-3 innings. ... Royals 1B Mike Sweeney was not in the starting lineup of Friday's first game because of a strained right hamstring. ... Segui's triple was his first since he did it in Kansas City on Aug. 7, 2001, and the sixth in 1,387 career games. ... Berroa was 3-for-3 with two doubles, the second time in his career he had three hits in a game. ... The 15 runs are the most ever forBaltimore against Kansas City.
