ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays placed shortstop Rey Ordonez on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left knee on Friday.
To replace Ordonez, Tampa Bay recalled infielder Antonio Perez from Triple-A Durham.
Ordonez is hitting .316 with three homers and 22 RBIs. He is second behind Texas' Alex Rodriguez among AL shortstops in batting average and RBIs.
``He needs a couple weeks of strengthening exercises,'' Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella said. ``I think he'll be ready to go in a couple weeks.''
Ordonez, acquired from the New York Mets last December in a three-player trade, had his best month ever offensively in April. He hit .319 with three homers and 20 RBIs.
