Ex-Tiger McLain Out of Jail

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. -- Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Denny McLain is serving the remainder of his eight-year federal prison sentence for embezzlement behind the counter of a convenience store.

McLain, sent to prison twice since leading the Tigers to the 1968 World Series title, is working at the convenience store as part of a work-release program, the Detroit News reported Thursday.

"It's an honor to meet him,'' said Michael Smith of Shelby Township told the paper as McLain mingled with customers Wednesday. "I'm still shaking. It's not every day you meet a two-time Cy Young winner. He's one of the greatest pitchers ever. I can't wait to tell my dad.''

The 59-year-old McLain, who according to his attorney is not permitted to talk to the media, could be released from the program in mid-October if he satisfies all the federal requirements.

McLain was indicted in March 1984 on charges of racketeering, extortion and cocaine trafficking and was sentenced to 23 years in prison. The verdict was thrown out 2 1/2 years later.

McLain and a partner were convicted on charges of embezzlement, money laundering, mail fraud and conspiracy after a company they bought in 1993 had $3 million taken from a pension fund. He began his sentence at a federal prison for nonviolent offenders in June 1997.
