ARLINGTON, Texas -- Former Cy Young Award winner Orel Hershiser was hired Wednesday by the Texas Rangers as an associate to new general manager John Hart.
Hershiser's duties include major league evaluation, player development, amateur scouting and on-field instruction.
"He was a great student of the game during his long and successful career, and brings a vast knowledge of pitching to the organization," Hart said.
Hershiser, 43, was a 204-150 a 3.48 ERA in 510 career appearances with Los Angeles (1983-94; 2000), Cleveland (1995-97), San Francisco (1998), and the New York Mets (1999).
He won the NL Cy Young with Los Angeles in 1988, when he led the league with eight shutouts and tied for the lead with 23 wins and 15 complete games.
Hershiser established a major league record by pitching 59 consecutive scoreless innings, then was MVP in both the NL championship series and World Series won by the Dodgers.
Hart, who spent the last 10 years as Cleveland's general manager, signed Hershiser as a free agent in 1995. The right-hander went 45-21 in three seasons as the Indians won two American League pennants. He was the AL championship series MVP in 1995.
The Rangers also Wednesday signed Josh Lewin to a five-year contract as their television play-by-play announcer.
Lewin, 33, will team with Tom Grieve to broadcast 140-145 games, and will continue to be involved with working regional games for the Fox Network on Saturdays. He replaces Bill Jones, whose contract wasn't renewed after five seasons.
Lewin spent the past four seasons calling Detroit Tigers games on Fox Sport Net Detroit. Before that, he was a member of the Chicago Cubs WGN-TV broadcast team in 1997 and did radio games for the Baltimore Orioles in 1995 and 1996.
He has been a part of Saturday national baseball coverage for the Fox network since 1996.
