ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Devil Rays hired Milt May as hitting coach Wednesday to replace Wade Boggs, who resigned last month.

May was the minor league hitting coordinator for the Pittsburgh Pirates for the past year. He was a hitting coach for 12 seasons with the Pirates and Marlins under former manager Jim Leyland.

May, who played high school baseball in St. Petersburg, played 15 major league season with five teams.

The Devil Rays finished last in the American League in runs scored and home runs and next-to-last in batting average. The team's 62-100 record tied Pittsburgh for baseball's worst.
