Salmon launches 'TWIB'
Show starts 26th season with focus on Angels
By Doug Miller / MLB.com

ANAHEIM -- Tim Salmon, welcome to reality television.
Major League Baseball Productions will launch the 26th season of its popular show "This Week In Baseball" on FOX on Saturday, and for the first time, it will feature a reality-based "day in the life" approach that centers on Angels right fielder Tim Salmon.

TWIB followed Salmon with a camera and a microphone throughout the day and into the evening pregame celebration when the Angels received their 2002 World Series rings Tuesday, April 1.

The show started in Salmon's car as he drove from his house to Edison Field and looked back on the Angels' improbable championship run last year.

Once the ceremony started, Salmon was miked, giving viewers an inside look at the emotional response of the Angels and one of their veteran core leaders.

"It was fun," Salmon said. "But it was definitely one of those things where I had to expand my comfort zone."

Salmon has been on a few TV commercials and does interviews daily, but he said he was thankful for the show's new format.

"I'm not much of a host," Salmon said. "This was better because it was more of them asking me questions and me just responding."

Steve Fortunato, the senior managing producer for MLB Productions, said Salmon did just fine.

"We didn't put the pressure on him to deliver lines," Fortunato said. "We took more of a fly-on-the-wall approach. He's well-spoken and very intelligent.

"We saw in the World Series DVD that he's emotional and a pretty special guy. We knew it would translate to this show, and it did."

Fortunato said Salmon and the Angels were the natural choice for the first show of the year because of their dramatic end to last year and the spoils that followed.

For example, the show depicts the players getting their rings and then cuts to a short feature on how the rings were made and designed with the special Anaheim logo by Calgary-based firm Intergold.

"We felt it was only appropriate to bring the world champions and their leader to this show, to kick off the 26th season of TWIB," Fortunato said. "The fans really get an inside look."

Meanwhile, the show also features a new segment called "Pitch, Hit and Run" hosted by former University of Arizona softball star Jennie Finch and the longstanding compilation of great plays, game-ending hits and bloopers called "How 'Bout That" that will feature the music of Zwan.

Salmon said all in all it was a good time.

"I enjoyed it," he said. "But it was a little weird having someone in my car."
