NLRB Won't File Complaint for Umps
NEW YORK -- The National Labor Relations Board decided not to file a complaint against baseball owners over their use of a computerized system that evaluates umpires.
The decision means the World Umpires Association's fight against the Questec Umpire Information System will now shift to a grievance that is to be heard by arbitrator Jerome Ross starting in the first week of July.
Umpires filed an unfair labor practice charge Sept. 23, complaining the commissioner's office had refused to provide information on Questec. The NLRB's New York office told the WUA earlier this month that NLRB general counsel Arthur F. Rosenfeld would not issue a complaint, and umpires withdrew the charge Tuesday, union lawyer Joel Smith said Saturday.
