View Full Version : Compensation for Annika?

Greetings --

Regarding Annika Sorenstam's playing the Colonial on a sponsor invite rather than an "earned" qualification --

It's generally known that the Colonial is a 114-player invitational event.

If both the Tour and Colonial officials had wanted to, and strictly as a compensatory measure just for this situation, they could have extended three additional invitations.

These additional invites could have been granted to those players who normally would be the top-ranked available alternates.

Greetings --

Well!

Vijay's withdrawal from Colonial has moved Patrick Sheehan (Patty's brother) from expectant alternate to fortunate and deserving participant.

So now, the top three alternates are Cliff Kresge, Paul Goydos and Brett Quigley.

The powers-that-be could still do it! How about some Monday Morning calls to what would be three very surprised players?

Fine point, Frank. I agree, let's see the next three get invitations.

I can't make up my mind about Annika's participation, though. I think the sponsor has a right to invite anyone they want (within reason), the Tour Players have every right to be upset about her participating and, at the same time, I just don't think it's that big a deal that she plays.

Regardless of how she performs, it will be difficult to judge her on two to four days on tour. Especially, when she's been practicing for just this event. Lots of very good PGA players miss the cut each week, that's not a indication of their ability. Just as winning isn't always indicitive of one's overall game. All you need is four good days.

Keep up the good ideas, Frank. Augusta National may come looking for you to help out with PR.

Personally, I don't think she should be playing. Like Frank said, PGA guys can't play because she is...secondly, there is a LPGA, why does she have to butt into the PGA? What's next? Some woman is going to want to try out for the Yankees????
Me, I'm gonna be rooting as hard against her as I can.
But I do agree that this one tournament isn't going to determine if she can play with the boys or not...I agree with Tiger, IF their gonna let her play, let her play 4-5 tournaments, then when she gets her ass handed to her maybe she'll go back and play in her own league!

GO ANNIKA! Anyone who roots against her is a sexist jerk IMO.

Good for her to expand her talents and try to play with the men, instead of sitting in her place with the ladies.

What century are we living in people? A woman can't play with the men? Gimme a friggin break.

Thank God there are women as gutsy as Anna, or we probably wouldn't even be voting by now.:hmm:

Here's to women breaking barriers, NOT BEING TOLD WHAT THEY CAN OR CAN'T DO!

And great to see her outplay some men!

Ya know, I started the day saying I was rooting against her but when I saw how releived she was that her first drive went in the farway, I was like OK, I'm not rooting against her but I'm not rooting for her, then when finished her front nine, I was like a what the hell GO Anika! It's not like for the last couple of years she's been whining about wanting to play with the boys and her interview after was so humble, saying how much she learned and how much harder it was than she thought it would be and how nice everybody was being and how she was looking forward to the LPGS US Open Nesy week. Let her play with the boys this week because I really don't think she's going to decided she wants to play in the PGA!

pp, in general, I concur with you. I believe Annika is the greatest woman golfer of all-time and I'm just not upset by her one-time appearance. However, to call taking a one-time sponsor exemption shot at the PGA Tour, at a course she hand-picked, "gutsy" might be overstating it just a bit.

If she accepts another six or seven exemptions and is really going to try to play with the boys, then gutsy might be the perfect word. In fact, if she REALLY wanted to play on the PGA Tour, and I think she has enough ability to make it, she should give up her LPGA career and chase down the boys. Yes, that means Q-school, Monday qualifiers, the Nationwide Tour or whatever.

I really like Annika and want her to do well, but to think that this is much more than a PR move by the event and just a taste of Tour life for Sorenstam is inaccurate, imo.

No, because it's the LPGA

LADIES PROFESSIONAL

The PGA stands for Professional Golfers, NOT, MEN'S GOLFERS.

If it were, it would be different.

Thats what I've been saying all week.... she certainly belongs here, as it is not the men's tour.

It will be soon though, apparently the PGA officials are meeting soon to make this a mens only tour.

I'm sure that I'll get reamed for this...but there is no way she should have been playing in that tournament. She should have to qualify like any other golfer...if she would have qualified, the more power to her.

Just because she's a woman with a huge PR for golf...shouldn't get in just for that.
