Reeling Orioles hit the road
Baltimore (19-24) at Anaheim (21-21), 10:05 p.m. ET
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com

ANAHEIM -- After losing one of their toughest games of the season Sunday to Tampa Bay, the Orioles begin a six-game road trip to Anaheim and Texas. The Orioles have lost seven of eight games, and the bullpen has melted down on several occasions during that stretch, including Sunday, when Buddy Groom and Jorge Julio gave up a combined five runs in 1 2/3 innings.

The Orioles fared well against the Angels in their first visit there last season, winning two of three games. They were swept in their second series against Anaheim, and that was during the team's season-ending, 4-32 finish.

Rick Helling will start Tuesday, and he has seven wins but nearly a 7.00 ERA against Anaheim. He was solid in his previous start against the Chicago White Sox, but he left the game with two runners on base, and the bullpen allowed both to score. He allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings during that outing.

The Orioles had 14 hits Sunday, the most in nine days. Deivi Cruz has gone 10-for-27 in his past eight games, raising his average to .208.

Players to watch: B.J. Surhoff. What happens to the veteran outfielder in the next few days is anybody's guess. He said he's healthy enough to return to the lineup, but the team might not think so. He might be activated for Tuesday's game.

Quotable: "I liked our energy [Sunday]. We just had to get out of this streak. But we'll be fine." -- Orioles manager Mike Hargrove on the team's recent slump.
