ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers announced today that Terry Francona has been appointed bench coach on manager Jerry Narron's 2002 coaching staff. The club also announced that Dom Chiti and Jay Robertson have joined the organization as special assistants to new General Manager John Hart. Chiti and Robertson will primarily be involved in Major League scouting and personnel evaluation.
Francona, 42, spent the 2001 season as special assistant to Baseball Operations for the Cleveland Indians. He managed the Philadelphia Phillies from 1997-2000 with a 285-363 record and third place finishes in 1998 and 1999. The youngest manager in the Majors at 37 when he assumed his role in 1997, Francona's teams improved their record in each of his first three years as Phillies manager.
Prior to joining the Phillies, Francona was third base coach for the Detroit Tigers in 1996 and coached and managed in the Chicago White Sox organization from 1991-95. He spent 10 seasons as a first baseman-outfielder in the major leagues from 1981-90 with the Expos, Cubs, Reds, Indians, and Brewers, batting .274 with 16 homers and 143 RBIs in 708 games. His father, Tito, played 15 seasons in the Majors from 1956-70.
Francona is currently managing Team USA in the 2001 Baseball World Cup being played in Chinese Taipei. Team USA is currently tied for fourth in Pool A with a 3-2 record and plays Italy today. The top four teams in each pool advance to the medal round.
Francona is the second member of Narron's staff to be signed for 2002, joining batting coach Rudy Jaramillo.
Chiti, 42, joins the Rangers after 13 seasons with the Cleveland Indians organization, the last five as a Major League scout. He was the Tribe's minor league pitching instructor from 1989-92, served as Cleveland's Major League bullpen coach from June, 1992-1993, was a Major League scout in 1994, and pitching coach at AAA Buffalo in 1995. Chiti was a minor league pitching coach in the Baltimore farm system from 1982-88 with his first assignment being at Bluefield in 1982 when Hart was managing that club. He pitched in the Atlanta and Baltimore systems from 1976-81 and is the son of former major league catcher Harry Chiti.
Robertson has spent the last 10 years in the Indians organization, serving as a Major League scout since 1997. He was Cleveland's director of west coast scouting operations in 1992 and the club's director of scouting from 1993-96. Robertson scouted for Philadelphia from 1982-88 and for Minnesota in 1989 before joining the Indians. He played in the Toronto organization from 1977-82.
RANGERS DECLINE TO EXERCISE 2002 CONTRACT OPTION ON JUSTIN THOMPSON
The Rangers also announced today that the team will not exercise its 2002 contract option on left-handed pitcher Justin Thompson.
Thompson, acquired from the Detroit Tigers in a nine-player deal in November, 1999, has missed all of the last two seasons with continuing left shoulder trouble. He has undergone four shoulder surgeries beginning in August, 1999, the last to remove scar tissue on September 26, 2001. Thompson is currently undergoing rehab on the shoulder. He remains on the Rangers' 40-man roster as an unsigned player for 2002. Thompson was 36-43 with Detroit from 1996-99, going 15-11, 3.02 in 1997 and pitching in the All-Star Game.
