Dang. Jerry Hairston broke a bone in his foot last night. He was leading the AL in steals. He was doing more than OK leading off.... he was having a pretty good season. :( But, what could be good news is Sparky's being called up from Ottawa. He's batting .315 in Triple A, and could freshen things up. Big's making the most of his chance out there in left field while BJ Surhoff's on the DL. Let's see what Sparky can do. They're saying Jerry's going to be out for 6-8 weeks. Bummer for him. :(

And our bullpen continues to suck.

And let me just say that I'm not likin' that rally monkey very much.

Hairston breaks bone in O's loss
Second baseman could be out eight weeks
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com

ANAHEIM -- The devastating loss was quickly overshadowed by the devastating injury.
Just a few minutes after a crushing 7-6 loss to the Anaheim Angels, the Orioles learned that second baseman Jerry Hairston will be out at least six weeks and likely more with a broken bone in his right foot.

Hairston was injured in the top of the second inning after fouling off a ball from Kevin Appier. Hairston lost his balance and stumbled across the plate, apparently catching his foot on the plate and appearing to roll his right ankle. But the foot took the brunt of the impact. Hairston was barely able to put pressure on the foot and was helped off the field by trainer Richie Bancells.

X-rays at University of California-Irvine showed a break of the fifth metatarsal bone. Hairston was scheduled to fly back to Baltimore on Tuesday night to be further examined by Orioles team doctors.

"I could feel a pop," Hairston said. "I knew right then it was broken. I think I caught it right at the plate. I knew it wasn't good."

Hairston was a potential All-Star choice for the Orioles, hitting .287 with an American League-leading 14 steals. After struggling for the past two years in the leadoff role, Hairston had been an offensive sparkplug. He also had started the Orioles' four-run first inning Tuesday with a single off Kevin Appier.

It appeared to be a badly sprained ankle, but Hairston said the ankle is fine. It's Hairston's first significant injury for the Orioles, who have had several hurt players this season. Hairston will be the fifth player to go on the disabled list, joining David Segui, B.J. Surhoff, Marty Cordova and Rodrigo Lopez.

"You know, I was just talking to my wife this morning about how well I was doing, and now this," Hairston said. "It's not the end of the world. It really hasn't hit me yet."

The club is expected to recall second baseman Brian Roberts from Triple-A Ottawa. He likely will start and bat leadoff. Roberts had three hits Tuesday, raising his average to .315 with an International League-leading 27 steals. (GO SPARKY!!! ) :jump:

Roberts will join a team that's perhaps at an emotional low point after Tuesday's loss, a game it dominated and led until there was one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Orioles manager Mike Hargrove used nearly his entire struggling bullpen to hold down the hard-charging Angels, who were pumped by two appearances from their infamous Rally Monkey.

Jorge Julio inherited a 6-5 lead in the ninth, and Troy Glaus led off. Glaus had already homered twice, and Julio proceeded to fall behind, 3-1, before Glaus drilled a double down the left-field line. Brad Fullmer broke his bat on Julio's slider and got jammed on another but muscled it down the right-field line for an RBI single. He was caught trying to reach second.

Julio kept throwing fastballs and paid the price against this slugging team. Scott Spiezio nearly won the game when he rocketed a ball off the top of the right-field wall. The ball dropped and landed on the head of Jay Gibbons and then rolled onto the warning track for a triple.

Hargrove then took a chance by intentionally walking Bengie Molina and Shawn Wooten to load the bases with one out. He then pulled Julio (0-3, 5.00 ERA) in favor of Travis Driskill.

Driskill did his job, getting a sharply hit ball right at shortstop Deivi Cruz. But Cruz had trouble getting the ball out of his glove and fired hurriedly home to catcher Geronimo Gil, who never came up with the ball as Spiezio slid home for the winning run. Another Anaheim rally and another Baltimore bullpen collapse.

"I thought I caught the ball," Cruz said. "But I didn't want to assume that and have the umpires call him safe. I didn't get a good grip on the ball. I had to hurry the throw, and it was low. I thought we had a chance at a double play."

The play capped a demoralizing night for the Orioles, who could have scored double-digit runs with another key base hit. The offense loaded the bases three separate times with less than two outs and came up empty. No sac flies, no base hits, no clutch hits. The O's left 10 runners on base.

"You can't continue to burn runs like that," Hargrove said. "If we score two more runs, we're still playing."

Rick Helling pitched six innings, allowing four runs -- two on Glaus homers -- and four hits. He handed a 6-4 lead to the bullpen, but B.J. Ryan gave up a run in the seventh to make it close.

The Orioles are 3-12 in the past 15 games, and the bullpen is 0-5 with an 8.34 ERA during that span. The offense appears to be out of its slump, leaving the bullpen as the Orioles' primary concern.

"The effort is there. It's just not happening right now," Hargrove said. "We've got to find a way to get it back untracked, namely our bullpen. We gotta to find a way to get those guys throwing the way they can. And we will."

Do you think Sparky's going to leadoff in Jerry's place? :umm

Wonder if they'll put that kinda' pressure on the kid, or if they use someone else (Lil' Sarge?)

I'm betting he's going to batting leadoff. They did that last season when he came up and he had been doing really well in Triple A before they brought him up.... so I think they'll do it again. I'm pretty sure he was batting leadoff in Ottawa, but I'm gonna check.

Our Sparky may just "spark" the offense.

:D

(Li'l Sarge is not doing too well..... Grover's been moving him around in the lineup, benching him, having private conversations with him..... so who knows where he'll bat tonight.)
