C.C. was pitching well tonight (6 IP, 5 Ks, 3 H) but sprained his ankle covering first and had to leave the game. Let's hope he's OK. As much as I'd like to see Jakey Jake stay in the roatation when Bere comes back, I don't want it to be at C.C.'s expense.

Ankle puts Sabathia on shelf until Friday

Boston- C.C. Sabathia is going to need some more time in the pool.

Sabathia won't make his next start until Friday against the White Sox at Jacobs Field as he recovers from a sprained left ankle suffered Wednesday in a collision at first base with Detroit's Dmitri Young.

Manager Eric Wedge felt Sabathia would be able to make his scheduled start tomorrow against Detroit at Comerica Park, but the 290-pound left-hander felt pain in the ankle yesterday morning during a short bullpen session at Fenway Park.

"I didn't feel it from the wind-up," said Sabathia, "but I felt the ankle when I was in the stretch."

Jake Westbrook, removed from the rotation last week to make room for Jason Bere, will start in Sabathia's place tomorrow against Detroit.

"I'm almost on my regular turn," said Westbrook. "If I stayed in the rotation, I would have started [today]."

Sabathia has been working out in the fifth-floor pool at the Boston Sheraton under the supervision of trainer Paul Spicuzza. He can walk and run in the water without aggravating the ankle.

"C.C. threw all right today," said pitching coach Carl Willis, "but we're going to be conservative with this."

Wedge said he did not think Sabathia would have to go on the disabled list.
