His final line: 4 IP, 8 H, 2 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 5 K
Really a so-so start for VBS. A lot of the balls hit against him were at'em balls. And to say he relied on his fastball is a huge understatement ... by my count, he threw seven or eight offspeed pitches the entire night. His FB topped at 91, consistently 89. His changeup, all two that he threw, was 81 MPH, and his curve/slider was 78 ... when he did throw an offspeed pitch, he had the hitters off balance, which really isn't much of a surprise ... I'd hope you'd be able to keep the hitters at bay with the curve/slider and changeup when you throw about 10 FBs to every 1 non-FB.
Pulled off a huge Houdini act in the third, though. He loaded the bases with 0 outs .. a 3-2 fielders choice forced the runner at third out at home, then he struck out the eight and nine hitters (the nine hitter was a pitcher).
Overall, I don't think his start couldn't have been expected. I thought, and hoped, he'd go more than four innings ... but giving up eight hits (surprisingly, I see only one was an extra base hit) with five strikeouts, it's tough to go deep into the game. Interestingly, I read Baseball America's scouting report of him ... one of his weaknesses was that he gave up a lot of hits for someone with his stuff, and that proved to be the case tonight. Lots of room for improvement, of course ... but the line very easily could've been 3 IP with 5 ER.
Brady Borner pitched the fifth and sixth innings, allowing a 2 run HR to the bleachers in left. McDade followed Borner for 2 and Johnston earned the save.
Offensively, the story was Shaun Skrehot. He had an exceptional game. The score was 4-2 Binghamton in the seventh, with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs .. Skrehot delivered a clutch 2 out single. Then, in the eighth, he singled, stole second, and then arguably his best play ... advancing to third on a pop-up in foul territory on the 1B side. Two pitches later, he scored the game winning run.
Shawn Garrett had 2 hits, as did Brett Roneberg in addition to his 2 RBIs .... Ray Navarette hit a ground rule double.
Burnett takes the ball tomorrow, then Landon Jacobsen's 1.76 ERA on Tuesday ... VBS starts Friday.
