Royals Place Hernandez on 15-Day DL
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Runelvys Hernandez, who was instrumental in the Kansas City Royals' quick start, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow.
The 25-year-old Hernandez won his first four decisions as the Royals bolted to a 17-7 start. But like the most of his teammates, he has struggled in May, going winless in three starts and allowing 15 runs in 18 1/3 innings over that span.
Hernandez was scratched from his scheduled start on May 20 at Seattle with tendinitis in his pitching elbow and has not pitched since May 14 at Minnesota.
Hernandez became the second Kansas City starter in less than a week to be placed on the DL. Right-hander Miguel Asencio, who was placed on the disabled list Wednesday, also is suffering from a sore right elbow.
The Royals, who are just 9-15 this month, filled Hernandez's roster spot by recalling right-hander Brad Voyles from Triple-A Omaha of the Pacific Coast League.
Voyles, 26, was 0-2 with a 6.51 ERA in 22 appearances for Kansas City last season.
