Mets' Sanchez, Cone Activated From DL

NEW YORK -- Two New York Mets have gotten healthy, but two more are feeling pain.

Shortstop Rey Sanchez, who has been out since May 10 with a sprained left thumb, and right-handed pitcher David Cone, who has been on the disabled list since April 22 with hip troubles, were activated.

Sanchez was batting .196 with no homers and six RBI after signing with the Mets in the offseason. Cone, who did not pitch in 2002, was 1-3 with a 6.75 ERA when he was injured, and will return as a long reliever.

Outfielder Timo Perez, who has hit .259 with four doubles in 39 games, was placed on the disabled list with a strained right calf, retroactive to May 26.

Left-handed pitcher Mike Stanton was not placed on the disabled list, but did receive a cortisone shot in his left knee after undergoing an MRI that revealed inflamation in the lining of the knee. Stanton is day-to-day.

To free up the extra roster spot they needed with Sanchez and Cone returning, the Mets optioned southpaw Jaime Cerda to Triple-A Norfolk. Cerda was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in 13 relief appearances, allowing 20 hits in 16 innings.
