A recent hot streak has pushed catcher Geronimo Gil back into the Orioles' starting lineup on a more consistent basis.
Gil has started seven of the past nine games, bringing him closer to his role when the Orioles broke camp in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His backup, Brook Fordyce, became a more regular presence in the lineup beginning in late April, as Gil struggled at the plate and suffered lapses in concentration behind it.

Before going 0-for-3 last night to drop his batting average to .274, Gil had hit safely in six of seven games, going 12-for-26. He scored a career-high three runs Tuesday night against Anaheim and hit his second home run.

Gil also had batted .392 in his last 15 starts before last night.

"I feel good right now," he said. "I feel better catching the ball. I'm happy to play more. When I play, I'm looser.

"I'm working in the cage, working at the tee. I feel relaxed and I see the ball better."

Minor league brawl

He doesn't throw hard enough to break glass, but John Stephens can shatter the serenity of a minor league baseball game.

Pitching for Triple-A Ottawa on Tuesday, Stephens touched off a brawl with the Toledo Mud Hens by hitting outfielder Cody Ross in the fifth inning.

Stephens and Ross exchanged words, and both benches emptied as Toledo manager Larry Parrish and Ottawa third baseman Jose Leon stood toe-to-toe. Leon reportedly took a swipe at Parrish, who retaliated.

Toledo's Parrish, Ross and Hiram Bocachica were ejected, along with Ottawa's Stephens, Leon and pitcher Darwin Cubillan.

Very nice. Catcher is a position I was worried about at the beginning of the year, but its worked out pretty well. When Geronimo was in a cold spell, Fordyce stepped it up, and now that Fordyce is down, Gil has been tearing it up. I really like these guys.
