Orioles 5, Rangers 4

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Jeff Conine singled in the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning after a costly throwing error by Hank Blalock, lifting the Baltimore Orioles past the Texas Rangers 5-4 Sunday.

Down 4-3, Baltimore got runners at first and second with two outs in the eighth against Francisco Cordero (2-5).

B.J. Surhoff then hit a smash down the third-base line that Blalock dived for and gloved, but his throw to first was wild, allowing Deivi Cruz to score the tying run.

Conine followed with a single to left, his second RBI of the game.

Sidney Ponson (7-3) allowed four runs and seven hits in eight innings and Jorge Julio worked the ninth for his 14th save.

Baltimore won three of four from the Rangers and went over .500 (28-27) for the first time since May 9. The Orioles have won nine of 11.

Melvin Mora gave Baltimore a 3-2 lead with a solo home run in the sixth, a drive that extended his career-best hitting streak to 14 games.

Alex Rodriguez answered in the seventh with a two-run, two-out homer that put Texas back in front. Two batters before the drive, Carl Everett reached first base when umpire Jeff Kellogg ruled Conine missed the tag on a wide throw from third baseman Tony Batista.

Conine and Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove argued the call in vain. Replays appeared to show Conine's glove touched Everett before the runner reached the bag.

Fortunately for the Orioles, the disputed call ultimately did not matter.

After Conine singled in a run to give the Orioles a 1-0 lead in the third, the Rangers scored twice in the fourth on an RBI double by Mark Teixeira and a run-scoring grounder by Michael Young.

Baltimore tied in the bottom half when starter Colby Lewis walked the first two batters and Cruz singled in a run.

A single by Surhoff and two walks loaded the bases for Baltimore with two outs in the fifth, but Lewis worked out of the jam by retiring Cruz on aroutine fly to right.

Notes

Surhoff got his first start for Baltimore since May 3, going 2-for-5 as a DH. He was on the DL from May 4-27. ... Texas hit four doubles and had 13 in the four-game series. ... Baltimore hit .289 in May, its best month since June '99 (.308). ... The Orioles' Luis Matos extended his hitting streak to acareer-high nine games.

Whoa! The O's are 3-0 when I go to Camden Yards this season!

I had a great time again... BJ had a great game, as did Conine (wow) and Sidney. Melvin was pretty exciting, and Matos is just crazy! Still hitting .500!

Speaking of .500, we are above it. Awesome!

I actually heare one of the guys on Baseball Tonight saying, "Could we have a 4-way race in the AL East?"

:D

But..... shhhhhhh .....:shh: we won't tell anyone.

:D

And you have to go to every home game from now on.

:D

Believe me, I would if I could! Hopefully I can get to a buncha more games this year, I only made it to about 3 or 4 last year. Not enough.

And yes, a 4-team race! I dont wanna jinx anything, but if we continue to stay within a few games, we will be able to pick up plenty of salary at the deadline (because of our FA failures last winter.) We could pick up an ace (Colon?) and/or big bat. This would be veeeery exciting.

I'll be in Houston for the Astros-Birds game this Thursday ... If you watch the game or highlights, I'll be the big fat guy out in the LF Crawford Boxes wearing an incredibly loud tie-dye t-shirt and standing up hollerin' at the umpires.

Nan, I'd love to cheer for the O's for you that day, but well, you know the story.

:Peep: However I will try to take some photos of your boys and post them up or e-mail 'em to you ... Maybe even a good "from behind" shot of Tony B for Princess, some Jay Gibbie views and, naturally, some pics of L'il Sparky. :smokin:

:D Wow. That'd be cool!

And, man, I wish some of these games would be televised in the NY area. I'd sure look for ya, Pops! :D

You know, if it were any other team your 'Stros were playing, I'd be in your corner............ but, yeah..... I know the story. :D

Should be veeeeeeeery interesting.

I'm hearing horrible rumors that, since it's in an NL park, Hargrove is going to put Segui at 1st, moving Co9 to outfield and Mighty Mel to short....... or something.... to keep Segui's bat in there......... and that Luis Matos may have to sit. Sucks. That's right, Grover.... take the really hot bat out of the lineup..... :hmm: and upset his rhythmn by letting him sit. Geesh.

Yeah, I've read those rumors too, Nan... here's what the lineup would look like if I were making it out:

1. Sparky 2b
2. Melvin ss
3. Segui 1b
4. Conine lf
5. Gibby rf
6. Tony 3b
7. Matos cf
8. Geronimo c
9. Pitcher

However, I've heard that he may keep Deivi Cruz at short, and keep Segui in, so Matos would likely be the odd man out in that scenario:

1. Sparky 2b
2. Melvin cf
3. Segui 1b
4. Conine lf
5. Gibby rf
6. Tony 3b
7. Cruz ss
8. Geronimo c
9. Pitcher

Even though Cruz has been hot lately, Matos has been even hotter. Melvin isn't that much worse in the field than Cruz. So I'd go with the first lineup. Hopefully Grover will see this and follow my ideas :D
