Colorado Trades Mayne to Royals
DENVER (AP) -- The Colorado Rockies traded veteran catcher Brent Mayne to the Kansas City Royals on Sunday for
right-handed reliever Mac Suzuki and catcher Sal Fasano.
The deal allows the Rockies to get more playing time behind the plate for Ben Petrick as well as bolster their bullpen.
''The trade is self explanatory. We wanted to give an opportunity for a young guy to play,'' Colorado general manager
Dan O'Dowd said of his 20th trade in less than two seasons. ''We felt this was the time to do it.''
Petrick, 23, and Mayne, 33, split time equally through the first 75 games. Petrick is hitting .236 after an 0-for-22 start.
The Royals were looking for experienced catching help since Gregg Zaun injured his calf last September. Zaun reported
to Haines City, Fla., on Sunday to begin rehab assignment.
''He's not a young guy, and we're not going to pound on him to the point where we push on him physically every day,''
Royals manager Tony Muser said of Mayne. ''But he's going to catch a lot here.
''With young pitchers over the last four years, we've had a difficult time finding people to develop them. We've been
trying to do it with young people behind the plate and young people on the mound, and that's a difficult thing to do.''
Mayne was the Royals' first-round pick -- 13th pick overall -- in the 1989 draft. He appeared in 398 games for Kansas
City from 1990-95.
''He's an above average receiver, with the experience at the major league level that we need to continue the development
of our pitchers here as well as the guys that we will bring up at some point,'' Kansas City GM Allard Baird said.
Suzuki was 2-5 with a 5.30 ERA in 15 games -- including nine starts.
''We have had very good reports on Suzuki,'' O'Dowd said. ''Our staff saw him very good twice. He has an above
average fastball with a good splitter.''
O'Dowd said Adam Melhouse would be called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs to be Petrick's backup. Fasano was
assigned to Colorado Springs.
