HOUSTON -- Baltimore owned a 5-1 lead after 4 1/2 innings Tuesday night at Houston and a 3-2 lead after six innings Wednesday night, but couldn't protect the lead either time.

"I had the feeling tonight we'd be able to hold on," outfielder Jay Gibbons said of Wednesday's 6-4 loss. Gibbons drove in three runs with a double in the sixth.

The Orioles try to win the finale of this three-game series Thursday night with Omar Daal facing Astros ace Roy Oswalt.

Baltimore has given up 17 runs in the two games at Houston.

The Orioles continue their National League road trip with a three-game series at St. Louis beginning Friday.

Quotable: "For about 10 days, a couple of weeks ago, it was a concern. It was fine up until the last two nights," -- manager Mike Hargrove on his bullpen

Quick hits: David Segui's pinch-hit single in the seventh inning Tuesday made it seven consecutive at-bats he had reached base. The streak started with a double last Friday vs. Texas. Segui did not play Wednesday night. ... Coach Sam Perlozzo did not accompany the Orioles to Houston. He is with his mother, who is gravely ill, in Cumberland, Md. ... Melvin Mora is 3-for-6 with three walks in the two games against Houston, his former organization. ... Cleanup hitter Jeff Conine is 0-9 in the two games. He struck out twice and popped up in four at-bats Wednesday.

Weather forecast: Thursday's high is predicted to be 92, cooling only to the mid-80s by game time.

Roof: With the heat and humidity on high and thunderstorms expected Thursday, this is why they built a retractable roof at Minute Maid Park. It should be closed for the game.

On-deck:

Orioles at Astros, Thursday, 8:05 p.m. ET; Orioles at Cardinals, Friday, 8:10 p.m. ET; Orioles at Cardinals, Saturday, 4:05 p.m. ET

:hoohoo Heck, that wouldn't have ruined my evening on Thursday ... I learned a long time ago not to let a bunch of boys playing a game decide whether or not I enjoy myself ... I was at the game with my buds drinkin' cold beer, talkin' baseball, gazin' at dames, drinkin' another cold one, laughin' at umpires getting smacked :D and drinkin' another cold one ... Even stopped for a margarita and some more chattin' and gazin' after the game ... I'd have been grinning if we'd won or lost.
