There are many who are of the thought that Philly is going to trade Scott Rolen before the trade deadline because he is almost a lock to leave via free agency at the end of the 2002 season. The Cardinals are reportedly one of the teams Rolen would sign an immediate extension with, thus no fear of a rental situation (assuming they could get together on dollars). Any potential deal is going to start with Bud Smith. In fact if the Cards make ANY major move over the next 9 months it will most likely be Smith walking out the door. It would be a shame to lose a future star in Smith but, for a guy as young as Rolen, I could definitely be comfortable with dealing Smith (I think Rolen is 26, not 100%).

I think that a potential deal would look something like this:

To Phillies: Bud Smith, Placido Polanco, Eli Marrero, CASH (maybe)

To Cards: Scott Rolen

That would be my best guess for a deal, but you would probably have to unload some salary to sign Rolen as well (Andy Benes, Mike Timlin)
