O's try to take series from Cards
Baltimore (29-31) at St. Louis (32-28), 2:10 p.m. ET
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com
ST. LOUIS -- The Orioles ended their four-game skid Saturday with an impressive 8-1 win over St. Louis. The offense belted four home runs, and Sidney Ponson turned in his second complete game in three starts. Ponson (8-3) eclipsed his win total from all of last season.
Now, the club will depend on inconsistent Jason Johnson to try to win the series and send the Orioles home on a positive note. Johnson started the first game of this Interleague road trip and was touched for three home runs in a span of five batters against Houston. He complained of pitching on five days' rest but will go on the normal four days Sunday.
The Orioles finally figured out a way to stop Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols, who had his streak of eight consecutive at-bats with a hit snapped by Ponson. He was a mortal 1-for-4 Saturday and was limited to an RBI double in the first inning. The O's offense will have to deal with Matt Morris, the Cardinals' ace. The four Oriole hitters who have faced Morris are a combined 0-for-11.
The Orioles play one more with St. Louis and head home for a season-long nine-game homestand with the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee and Toronto. Sammy Sosa is expected to play for Chicago.
