I was just thinking about this on my walk home from 68th and Central Park West (almost 2 miles, so I walked some of it off.) I don't remember the last time I ate so much that I was painfully stuffed. I mean, I had some pie sitting in front of me and I actually could not put another forkful into my mouth (I had eaten about 1/3 of it.) I think the second helping of turkey, potatoes and gravy was a bad idea.:hmm:
Cyn, you ran 3 miles!!!!! WOOOHOOOO!!!!! SO DID I!!! (Maybe that's why I thought I could have that 2nd helping.).... aaaargh. They sent leftovers home with me. (Nobody likes the dark meat, so I get it all.) I put it in my refrigerator and am wondering if it will even look good to me tomorrow.:P

i actually didn't eat much. I am not a real big fan of thanksgiving as i think that a meal where the main objective is to stuff yourself until you pop is sort of a silly idea. I did, however eat lots of pie.
It used to be that there would be about 30 people at my house for thanksgiving. Now there are uually only about 13 or so. My mom still cooks like there is 30. Basically we each had our own pie and 3 people had enough to have 2.. haha

shawn ....i know what you mean about thanksgiving.... i'm not too crazy about the idea of eating til you :barf:
:hmm:
and every year i say i won't eat as much, but i always somehow eat more than i care to....and that bugs me, esp. when i've been working out regularly......
so anyway, what kind of pies did you have?? did you have it a la mode??? :toungue:
nanner .....i thought of you when i was running!:bigsquare *sigh* i wish i didn't have a bad back..... i just LOVE to run, but i can only do it once in a while...... i decided to go to the highschool track near my parents' house yesterday when i saw the insane amounts of food my mom was cooking (and esp. the sugary stuff! gadzooks!:uhoh: ) i knew i was going to succumb to temptation so i thought i could lessen the damage if i went running..... well, i told myself 1 mile would be great...... but while i was there, the 1 mile became 2! and the 2 became 3!! and it felt so good to accomplish that-- i felt it was "okay" to have that 2nd helping:hmm:
but i didn't have any pie though--- i had that lethal ice cream instead:hmm:
so what kind of pie did you have???
oh, and would you happen to know what would make running easier for someone with a bad back?? (or what would lessen my chances for injury??)

pies.. hmmmm... let's see...
we had pumpkin, cherry, apple, peanut butter (my personal favorite).... ummmm.. let's see... peach, blueberry, mince meat...
and some we had doubles of....
I know the back/running question wasn't for me, but since I have a degree in athletic training, I am going to give you my answer.:)
There really is nothing that you can do to lessen the strain on your back. The problem with a bad back is that the muscles in your back are very difficult to stretch. That, coupled with the fact that yur back is really what supports your entire body, puts a ot of stress on your back when you run. The best thing that you can do really is to find stretching exercises that work the muscles in your back. If you do that before and after you run, it will minimize the pain that you have.
The ther important thing is that you really must know your limits. If you plan to run 3 miles, and your back starts to bothe you after 1 1/2, then stop running. For some people (like me) this is next to impossible. I always KNOW what my limits are, but when it comes to sports, I am constantly trying to push them further and further.
So just don't be like me! :)

Oh! i didn't know you had a degree in athletic training:uhoh: (but you know, i was hoping you'd jump in, even though the question was for nanner:) )
thanks for the tips!!!:angel2:
i think you are right about the stretching before and after...... i have to say, this intense yoga i've been doing really seems to help..... but yeah, i've got that same problem about pushing past my limit.... it's just that, well, the pain feels soooo good! i probably should have stopped at 1.5 miles....but when my thigh muscles started throbbing, i was like YEAH!! (you know that delicious pain in your muscles?:P )
hmm.... peanut butter pie? ....i've never tried it.......:)

yeah.. I do have a degree in athletic training.. Just will probably never use it aside from giving someone whom I have never met advice online..:)
I also have another degree and 3 minors... crazy stuff I tell ya..
That tnrobbing in your thigh muscles that you speak of is exactly why I run. I absolutely love it. That is why I always push myself to the edge and beyond. There is a reason that they call it a "runner's high."
Mmmm.. around here, peanut butter pit is classic... Nothing could ever replace it...
I'll bring some with me.

GOOD LORD, SHAWN! GETOUTTAHERE!!!:uhoh: ALL THOSE PIES?!?!?!? Man, you weren't kidding when you said your mom cooks for 30!
We had apple and pumpkin. Really good, but I was so full I felt like my stomach was going to burst... I haven't felt that uncomfortable in years... I hate feeling that way, which is the reason I never take seconds.... but I did yesterday.:barf:
Cyn, Shawn knows better than I, and I've always found three exercises to help with stretching out my back. I had sciatica many years ago, and an osteopath gave me these exercises.... and he also said the best way to strengthen your back is to strengthen your stomach muscles, thereby taking away some of the work your back has to do.
Okay. For one of them, I lie on my back, and slowly bring each knee to my forhead... holding onto the shin... geez. This is really hard to describe without doing it. Your leg is bent, not straight up... and it should be done slowly... ten on each leg, for 2-3 sets.
The other one is your basic stomach crunch, with knees bent, and folding your arms cross-wise in front of you. A couple sets of 10 of those.
The third one is a pelvic lift.... you know, where you're on your back, knees bent, and you just lift your pelvis off the floor.... 2-3 sets of 10.
I don't know. They helped me!

Another really good exercis to do is to sit down and spread your feet out in front of you... The idea is to put your hands flat on the floor in front of you, and while keeping your back completely straight, you try to move your hands towards your feet... Now if you do it right, you will only be able to move your hands about 6-12 inches along the floor because you are keeping your back as straight as you can. It will stretch out the lower muscles in your back.
and yes Nanner.. we did have all of those pies.. and unfortunately I have been eating some of them today also...

I've never heard of peanut butter pie, sounds interesting.
No one in my house is a huge fan of turkey. Usually we have chicken instead, but my mom got turkey this year for some reason. A 12 pounder. There's a ton leftover from that :hmm:
don't think we'll ever finish it! I just love stuffing though. I'm not crazy about mashed potatos anymore - especially since I learned how evil starch can be ;) Our cranberry sauce was delicious - it had little bits of orange in it too - yum!
We only had five people here so not too much dessert. I made the pecan pie and the Native American pudding (we used to call it Indian pudding, but I'm trying to be PC). My cousin also brought over some pumpkin pie. The pecan pie is all but gone though
Sounds like you guys had fun!
