Here's a list of best sports cities in America according to ESPN:

Anaheim needs more credit considering the Angels won the world series and now the Mighty Ducks are in the Stanley Cup Finals with a chance to win it tonight.

Same with New Jersey. But the way that ESPN has it is really dumb. If Detroit didn't have a baseball or Football team, we'd be right up there. No city should be punished for having a bad team, over no team at all.

Baboon -
While I admit the "experts" working at ESPN aren't always on target with their ideas, there are some writers working there that are fairly intelligent. Furthermore, I've read some of your Red Sox posts ... and the name "baboon" is rather fitting. ;) That being said, same goes for the guy who didn't take into consideration the cities without teams in one or more sports.

Pdaj --- No offense, but I find Baboon's posts here at Forum to be most entertaining ... He ranks at the top of my "spewing coffee through nose" chart ... I know you were just sort of kidding when you said that, but try picking on some other moron around Addicts next time, like that Guru fellow ;)
Ok, this ESPN Sports City poll is a bunch of equestrian excrement ... First, they should subtract like a zillion points from any city that's had a riot after a championship or runner-up finish in any sport ... If so, see ya' Detroit, see ya' Dallas, see ya' LA, see ya' lots of towns ... If rioting in the streets doesn't directly affect the outcome of a poll like this, then it's lost all credibility with me.
Here's my list according to visits I've made and how fans acted more than anything else ... Not including my old hometown of Houston just to possibly stay a bit more objective.
1) Pittsburgh - - - Ok, maybe they had some trouble in the streets after a hockey win or two ... But if you took all I know about hockey, multiplied it by a thousand and put it in an empty pint-sized Ben & Jerry's container, there'd still be room for a few scoops at the top ... Hands down, the city where I went in as the opposition and was treated the very best ... The new parks are nice (PNC is great, Heinze is nothing fancy), the fans all treated me with respect despite my college team beating Pitt U., and it's cheap as hell to drink and eat in that town ... Their fans will get in your face and argue Steelers this, Pirates that until the cows come home ... But they also will buy you drinks while debating and never once got personal with me regarding my favorite teams ... I've had some folks tell me maybe I just caught them all on a good weekend, and it's true that most of the people I met seemed to be from Punxsutawney and not Pitt proper, but still a great town in my opinion.
2) Kansas City - - - Very nice ballpark, very cordial fans, very fan-friendly prices ... Understand the Chiefs fans are quite rabid, yet consistently positive and behind their pigskin crew ... For being one of those sort of cookie-cutter stadiums stamped out in the 60s and 70s, Kauffman Std still has a lot of charm and unique character, and I promise you will never go into a cleaner sports arena in this country ... If you're a barbecue fan, and who isn't?, good golly Miss Molly you can pop a few trouser buttons and zippers in this town.
3) Denver - - - Just don't tell the folks you're from Texas and you'll be fine ... Coloradoans might be pissed that when Texas ceded some land to them back in the 1830s, it was all flatland and no good for skiing ... Either that or one real butt-munch of a Texan visited the state shortly thereafter and really made an @ss of himself, and the tales of that butt-munch have been passed down to every generation, hell, it's probably part of their DNA by now ... Whatever, they hate Texans ... Despite that, I've always had a good time up there ... Really nice area around Coors Field, and the park itself is sharp ... Haven't been to new football stadium, but experiences at Mile High were fairly pleasant ... And it's just be-yoooooo-tiful country all around the place.
4) New Orleans - - - May sound weird to include the Crescent City since they have a Triple-A team and not an MLB squad ... But it's a neat town with tons of great food and music and places to go before/after a game ... Their fans, especially the Saints and everyone else who backs the LSU Tigers just down the road apiece, are loyal to the point of being obnoxious, but they're still a generally passive bunch ... But if they lose, they're like, "Oh hell, Boudreaux. 'Dat qwaterback is about as useless as a sore toof on a 'gator. But whachu' gonna' do, Boudreaux? What say we run down 'dat road which run side-by-each and pass a good time wif' some crawfish and Dixie beer?" ... I do recommend you consider all angles of escape before you go to an LSU football game, however ... LSU fans in Death Valley down in Baton Rouge, best way I can describe them is they're like the Viet Cong during the '68 Tet offensive, all doped up and liquored up to the point of becoming little individual suicide units ... Be forewarned ... The minor league park for the Zephyrs is very nice, and you have to remember that a lot of parts of New Orleans just look seedy to outsiders ... That's because they are seedy and there are a bunch of weirdos in NOLA, but it's a very fun place to visit ... Just don't go June through late September.
5) Detroit - - - Ok, I know I put 'em down a while ago for the actions of a few hundred in recent times ... But Tiger Stadium was just such a great place, it has to be on my list somewhere ... Went there a couple of times, including it's final season in 1999 (also final season of Astrodome) ... Wonderful park, nice bars and cafes around the old cathedral ... And from my experiences, Detroit also has a bad rap about being this violent "black" city ... I stayed inner city both times I went, the last time at the Courtyard near the Renaissance Center ... There was also an African Music History Festival going on at the Park, my 2 pals and me were the only two white guys for like 30 blocks (think that was about the distance from our hotel to Tiger Std.) ... And not once did I feel intimidated ... You can't swing a dead cat around in San Fran without hitting some weirdo or junkie on their streets ... Yet we walked, AFTER DARK, through downtown, crashed a local black sports bar (Sweetwater Tavern, go there if you ever get to Motown) and never felt like we were in danger ... We did recognize that we looked out of place, but never were bothered (the story about thatis longer but will not bore)

Montreal's #11, just in front of Toronto on this list
You want to see some crazy fans where there really are no exact records and stats it often seems, go to a baseball game in the Mexican League sometime ... They've got teams in CancĂșn and maybe still one in Cozumel if any of you are ever down that direction.

And i don't recall Dallas ever rioting.

Does it seem logical that a team should be given credit if they finish with a poor record, yet still have a lot of fans attend games?? Wouldn't that be a sign of a pretty darn good sports city??

when it comes down to it, this writer's definition of a "good sports city" is not the same definition i was thinking of..... *sigh* i wish i hadn't read the article, it just annoyed me  :hmm:

There were problems one of the last times the Red Wings one, and Dallas had some major trouble when the Cowdogs won one of those Stuper Bowls back in early-mid 90s
Awww, when did the members at Addicts become so sensitive?
Geez, maybe it's the increase in female members? ;)
Anyhow, my comment was primarily playful -- and meant to serve as foreshadowing for a future post in the Red Sox forum. ;)
Haha, but this is niether the time or place to make my rant regarding the gross negativity continually breathing on the Red Sox board ... but expect me to "bump up" some old threads revealing the pessimism surrounding the signings of players such as Todd Walker (er, trade), Bill Mueller, David Ortiz, etc.
But, let's stay focused! Pop Tart -- your first post in this thread was extremely impressive. Very interesting analysis! And an enjoyable read!
Keep up the good work ;)

Cyn -- I'm in complete agreement. From my perspective, a large part of what makes a city a great sports enviorment is emotional. For instance, how much do the sports franchises consume the fans? In what instances are certain teams cemented into a city's culture, identity, and heart? Could you imagine the New York without the Knicks? Boston without the Red Sox? I couldn't even fathom the possibility.
This article should be retitled, "2002's Most Successful Sports Cities."

Haha, Princess -- solid point.
But you have to admit, doesn't this year's team have a special glow to it? ;)

Pdaj, grow a nutsack and try to comment on things that are taking place in CURRENT news instead of reacting to what people said six months ago. Hindsight is 20/20. In the Red Sox forum, we discuss what is happening today, and a lot of the time we speak through emotions. But of course you, being the almighty wise one that you are, knew that the acquisitions of Todd Walker, Bill Mueller, et all would lead to the offensive explosion the Sox have experienced this year. That's what I like about you. ;) Wait six months between posts, then react.
Monkey,
Unforunately, my "nutsack" is far too large as it is ... the old "package" threads will back up this claim. Now -- in looking up the old posts, I wasn't attempting to showcase the inaccuracy of your predictions (heck, we already knew that), but instead, your incessant negativity surrounding every Red Sox transaction. Heck, I admit that it's difficult to successfully predict the inpact of a player, but one does not have to continually use senseless babble like "he sucks" or "this team is a bunch of ass rats" in reference to the majority of Red Sox players. To be honest, it's rather annoying ... which is why I decided not to post 4-6 months ago.
But have no fear. I'll do my best to point out your inefficiency in the near future. I'm sure there will be many examples to choose from! ;) Haha, but hopefully last night's game has given you enough optimism to last the week!
Good chattin', folks.

PDAJ, you need to think about what you are saying. If you don't like what we post about, feel free to add some positivity.
However, reappearing and saying you don't like our forum is rude.
The Red Sox forum was DEAD before I got there, and I have tried to make it fun.
If you don't like it, hey, sorry, can't please everyone.
Insulting members isn't cool.
And Babs, no more grow a nutsack talk.
That said, Giambi does SUCK.
And stop being so selective, I am first to praise good play.
Must have sense of humor to post in Sox forum.

Princess --
1) I never said I didn't like the Addicts Red Sox forum. Heck, I challenge you to find an occassion that I ever said such a thing. I would never speak such words, because it wouldn't be true.
2) I never intended to insult Monkey Boy. I was just being honest about the general conversation in the Red Sox forum. I have on innumerable occassions attempted to add "sunshine" to our beloved forum, but have always struggled to stay afloat in the sea on pessimism. And truthfully, that's why I don't post as often.
3) Hey, I'm a nice guy -- sometimes. We all know that the large majority of Addict members are very nice people .. and they're very nice to eachother. However, having a disagreement .. or being honest about your sentiments, does not count as "bashing." We don't always have to hug eachother after every post.
4) I do have a sense of humor -- so so I've been told. In my initial post in this thread, I was joking. I apologize if it was misread as an "insult" .. because that wasn't the intention. From that point, I wished only to assert my feelings about the negative atmosphere in the Red Sox forum. Monkey Boy wanted to "playfully" get personal, and hey, I can play that game with no hard feelings, too.
5) Princess, you're a cool person. I don't always agree with you, but I dig your style. You brought in Monkey Boy, and that's great. But it doesn't mean I have to like him .. or what he says. If he wants to post "babble" .. I'm going to contest that babble. It's not personal. It's not being unfriendly. If you prefer to favor him, that's fine by me.
6) Yes, I think you'll see a Red Sox victory tonight. ;)

I realize that this is gonna cause trouble and I am in no way taking sides, but I gotta stick up for Babs... He's a great person, and I don't know how anyone could not like him. He's never been anything but overly nice to me and I absolutely adore him.

This isn't about "Babs" being "nice" or not! Heck, if I was to have a major tea party, he'd surely be invited. Since when does disagreeing with someone's opinion or tone translate into hating him or her? Geez, when will this mass orgy stop! ;)

Yes, I said that I don't have to like him. And niether do you. Or anyone for that matter. I was strictly responding to PP's reply that stated, "Babs is a great member, I've met him personally, and can't let you bash him." I don't know Babs well enough to consider whether or not I like him ... however, I've read enough to know that the endless negativity can be overwhelming.
And no .. you're not on the "sh*t list." But you're not on the "buddy" list, either. ;) Additionally, while you were so kind enough to add your perspective on this issue, I guess I should inform you that you missed the issue completely. This is not a discussion involving whether or not Babbon is likeable. If that was the issue, your response would have been perfect.
