O's open nine-game homestand
Cubs (34-27) at O's (29-32), Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. ET
By Gary Washburn / MLB.com
BALTIMORE -- Sunday's game had a sour ending and culminated a poor road trip for the Orioles. They return home for a nine-game homestand against the Cubs, Brewers and Blue Jays. The O's have lost five of six games, and the bullpen took a beating on the 1-5 road trip.
After Sidney Ponson preserved the bullpen with a seven-hitter Saturday, Jason Johnson lasted only three innings Sunday, forcing the 'pen to toss five innings. It will need Monday's day off to prepare for the Cubs' impressive offense.
Sammy Sosa, who is appealing his eight-game suspension for using a corked bat, is expected to play in at least one of the games. It will be the Cubs' first visit to Camden Yards, and the crowds are expected to be increased from normal weekday games.
The Orioles' offense has put on an impressive display, collecting double figures in hits in 16 of its past 19 games. Deivi Cruz is on a tear. He went 8-for-12 in the St. Louis series, and Melvin Mora (20 games) and Luis Matos (14 games) have career-best hitting streaks.
