According to Jayson Stark on ESPN.com
"The Pirates have been making it known that their two right-handers at the back end of the bullpen, Mike Williams and Brian Boehringer, are both going to be available. But they would need to be overwhelmed to deal Scott Sauerbeck, who is one of the best left-handed setup arms around."

Who in the world would give us anything for Boehringer the way he is pitching? That is almost laughable. And Williams and his 5 plus era is only slightly better. Yes he has the saves, but the era is atrocious. Especially at home.

I doubt it Princess. Boehringer has a 9.00 era to go with Williams 5.92. I doubt that would improve you much. Williams does have 16 saves in 19 attempts. He had a great year last year, but with most other teams he would probably be a right handed set up man. Teams are hitting .319 against Boehringer and .400 against him in the last 3 games.

Teams are hitting .522 against Mendoza.
He has given up more hits than recorded outs.
Either guy would be an improvement.

I think that Mike Williams would be a great set up man on a good team like the Red Sox. He has been struggling a little bit this season, but his ERA is really the result of a few outings that were the horrendous. I do not believe he has been that bad the rest of the time.

Williams didn't do too hot with the Astros in 2001 as a set up man, so I don't think he'll have much value there ... certainly much less than whatever value he has as a closer.
Ralph, your first post summed up my initial thoughts when I saw this topic. We'll be fortunate to get a fringe AA guy for Boehringer ... maybe Williams, too.

Honestly, I have always thought that when Mike Williams gets into trouble, it is when they have him pitch more than one inning for some reason. I thought that was where most of his era was coming from this season. If anyone knows any stats on that that would prove me right or wrong, try and post them please.
Josh, you might be right about him not working in a set up role, I forgot about that stint with the Astros.
