Royals Sign Pitcher Lima to Minor League Deal
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Former All-Star Jose Lima moved a step closer to the major leagues when he signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals.
The veteran right-hander was assigned to Triple-A Omaha in the Pacific Coast League.
The 30-year-old Lima was with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League. He made eight starts for the Bears and posted a 6-1 record and 2.33 ERA with a league-high 52 strikeouts.
The native of the Dominican Republic has appeared in 262 major league games with the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros. He was an All-Star for the Astros in 1999, when he posted a 21-10 record and 187 strikeouts in 246 1/3 innings.
Lima pitched for the Tigers last season and was 4-6 with a 4.20 ERA.
