Mets to Fire Steve Phillips
By David Lennon
STAFF CORRESPONDENT
June 12, 2003, 1:46 PM EDT
Arlington, Texas -- The Mets have scheduled a conference call for this afternoon to announce the firing of general manager Steve Phillips.
As the architect of this $120-million failure, Phillips' days were numbered. And with the Mets (28-35) currently 15 games out of first place in the National League East, owner Fred Wilpon apparently had seen enough to make the long-anticipated move.
Phillips and Bobby Valentine each signed three-year extensions on Oct. 31, 2000 and the GM lasted only slightly longer than his former manager, who was fired at the end of the 2002 season. Phillips' deal was worth $3 million over three years, and he currently earns $1.1 million in the final year of that contract.
Phillips was first appointed as the Mets' GM on July 16, 1997 when Joe McIlvaine was relieved of the position. Under Phillips' tenure, the Mets reached the postseason twice and advanced to the World Series in 2000 before falling to the Yankees in five games.
But the Mets have not had a winning season since finishing 82-80 in 2001, and the team has been in disarray since then. Last year's 75-86 record, punctuated by an off-the-field drug scandal, wound up costing Valentine his job. Phillips, to Valentine's amazement, apparently was granted one last chance, but assembled another costly flop.
The Mets may eventually hire a director of baseball operations to oversee the entire organization, but assistant GM Jim Duquette, who is currently with the club in Texas, is expected to take over for Phillips on an interim basis.

I'm thinking Alomar IS gone.
I heard several interviews with Duquette today, and he mentioned a couple of things that make me believe this.
First, he talked at length about the importance of bringing in players who are not only good players and good people, but who are players who can handle NY. He pointed out that the Yankees have had problems with this over the years also, and that it is an important consideration in any transaction.
Second, he mentioned Danny Garcia a couple of times. For those who don't know who Danny is, all I need to say is that he's batting .341 for the Tides this season.
If we can dump Alomar for a couple of AA kids and perhaps even that elusive bag of balls, I'd be happy to see Danny Garcia at Shea.

Finally, the Mets won the game tonight by 11-0 after Phillips' demise!

:clap2: :clap2: I was ecstatic on Thursday. This news, following that other New York team being no-no'd, actually had me in a good mood for the first time in over a month. :bigsquare I think Duquette will do just fine.
As far as Alomar goes, I've been saying for weeks that he's gone by the end of June. But I got to thinking the other day. If we can't get anything decent for him, or if we're gonna have to pay his salary anyway, why not just keep him the rest of the year, then let him and Garcia platoon in September. Hopefully Robbie can teach the kid some things in the last month. Whereas Alomar has not been much of an asset, he usually has not been that much of a liability. (Usually being the operative word!) Use him to teach the kid if we can't get anybody for him.
