BOSTON -- Two of the seven groups interested in buying the Boston Red Sox have reportedly strengthened their position to make a final bid this week.
The Boston Globe reported Saturday that one of the groups, led by Hollywood producer Tom Werner and ski mogul Les Otten, is nearing an agreement with John Henry to enter a final binding bid for the club. Henry, the current owner of the Florida Marlins, would have to sell all of his interests in the National League team before being permitted to join the Werner/Otten group.
The paper also reported that another bidder, Boston native and land developer Frank McCourt, has approached the investment banking firm Lehman Brothers about joining his efforts to buy the Red Sox.
The Red Sox have called for final binding bids to be submitted by Nov. 29. Once selected, a bidder must obtain the approval of Red Sox limited partners and then Major League Baseball owners before assuming control of the franchise.
