KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) - Former All-Star Jose Lima officially returned to the major leagues on Sunday and pitched six innings for the Kansas City Royals.
The Royals purchased the contract of Lima from Class AAA Omaha on Sunday as part of a series of roster moves and the righthander allowed four runs and six hits in Kansas City's 5-4 win over the San Francisco Giants.
The Royals also activated second baseman Carlos Febles, placed infielder Mendy Lopez on the 15-day disabled list with an injured right calf and optioned pitcher Nate Field to Omaha.
The 30-year-old Lima was with the Newark Bears of the independent Atlantic League before being signed to a minor league contract by the Royals on Wednesday. He made eight starts for the Bears and posted a 6-1 record and 2.33 ERA with a league-high 52 strikeouts.
"I don't know how to describe it. Going from where I was last week to being here was big," Lima said. "It took me from September to now to be back here and a lot of hard work. At least I kept my ballclub in the game."
Lima did not get a decision as the Royals rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth.
The native of the Dominican Republic has appeared in 262 major league games with the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros. He was an All-Star for the Astros in 1999, when he posted a 21-10 record and 187 strikeouts in 246 1/3 innings.
Lima pitched for the Tigers last season and was 4-6 with a 4.20 ERA.
Febles has been on the DL since May 28 with a contusion of the right ring finger. In 40 games this season, Febles is batting .245 with seven RBI.
In 28 games this season, Lopez is hitting .279 with no homers and three RBI. Field appeared in just one game for the Royals.
