On base all 7 times in this game and the Sox have now taken a 5-3 lead in the top of the 13th vs Philly..

I was so hoping that the Sox would win. I love Todd dearly, so I just couldn't be angry at him. But I do wish he hadn't done it.

Like I said, I just can't be mad at him.
But, if the Sox finish out of the playoffs because of that one game, I probably will bi_tch at him about it. ;)

Yeah, great day for Nomah, and Walker, but too bad the rest of the team sucked. And then Nomah goes 0-3 ni the next game. And Manny goes 0-9 for the series. I dont even want to go into the pen. Once again, Pedro doesnt pick up a win. He should be 8-2 by now. Theres also good and bad news. The good news is that Mendoza is pitching in the minors for rehab, and the bad news is that he should be back within a few weeks. :banghead

Well, if any of you watched last night's debacle, you'd know why you don't want Armando Benitez on your team.
I was spitting bullets after that one. :banghead

hehe...I didnt get a chance to watch highlights this morning. Im sorry about that Jules. I really dont want Benitez either. You know who I like alot, is Billy Koch. Hes got a nasty fastball. I think he pretty underrated. He would be a great pickup if its possible. :(

Since Koch is with the out-of-the-running White Sox, perhaps he could be had for the right price.
But I do have a question. From what I've heard, the Red Sox farm system isn't very good. What do they have that the White Sox would want?

They can take our whole bullpen, just leave Lyon...hehe Koch's salary is farely low for a proven closer, so he shouldnt dent our payroll. Well Im just dreaming, we never get players I want...Im still trying to grasp reality that we have Manny and Pedro. :D

In all seriousness Bob, that's exactly my point. Your pen sucks. Who in their right mind would give you someone good for garbage? The Yankees get away with pulling that crap, but the rest of us don't.

Hmmm, maybe some future picks?? The Chisox cant suck anymore then they do now rite? So it might interest them to get some new young talents.
To think of it, I dont know why Koch has been a nomad, coming from Toronto, to Oakland and now on in Chicago. Someone that talented should be more steady. He had 44 saves and only 6 blown for Oakland last year. He reminds me to Billy Wagner. Small but powerful.

He grew up a couple of towns over from me. Years after I'd left, of course, but still...
I never pay attention to saves because they can be gotten very cheaply. The definition leaves a lot of wiggle room, so I'm far more likely to pay attention to WHIP. And I don't know what Koch's WHIP is off the top of my head.

Walks + Hits per I nnings Pitched.
For relievers in particular, this is a great stat to pay attention to.
For example, if a relief pitcher comes in with the bases loaded and 1 out. The first guy he faces hits a single that drives in the runner on third, the next guy walks, and then the next two make outs to end the inning. The relief pitcher manages to IMPROVE his ERA because the runs belong to the guy he replaced. But he's allowed both a hit and a walk in 2/3 of an inning, which is not good. This would give him a WHIP of 3 ((1+1)/.667). This is NOT good and, if this trend were to continue, he's someone I do NOT want on my team.
Armando Benitez has a WHIP of 1.46. Eric Gagne has a WHIP of .667. John Smoltz has a WHIP of .89. Mariano Rivera's is .87.
And Billy Koch's is 1.495.
Does this tell you something? :notme:

If a relief pitcher gives up more hits than he innings pitched, it's a HUGE red flag for me. It's less so for starters, because they have so much more time in a game. But for relievers, there's a good chance that they came in with runners on, so WHIP is a very important stat for me.
I don't even pay much attention to a starter's Ws and Ls on a season-by-season basis. Why? Here's a great example. Al Leiter gave up a single unearned run to the Reds 2 years ago, and lost 1-0. Did he pitch badly? Nope. Not at all. Then last year, he gave up 2 runs to the White Sox and lost the game 2-1. The only run support he got was on a homer by Mike Piazza. With starters, Ws and Ls don't tell the full story. This past week, Tom Glavine gave up 1 run on 4 hits in 7 innings. He lost, 1-0, but he pitched BEAUTIFULLY. Unfortunately, Dontrelle Willis pitched better.
