Padres' Nevin Takes Batting Practice

SAN DIEGO -- Padres slugger Phil Nevin took batting practice for the first time since dislocating his left shoulder diving for a ball in left field on March 7 during a spring training game.

When he was hurt, it was thought that Nevin could miss the whole season. The team's medical staff never ruled him out, and his rehabilitation has gone well.

Nevin, who thinks he might return to action around Aug. 15, took 50 swings during early batting practice before the game against the Colorado Rockies.

Nevin knows he's not 100 percent, but said he experienced no pain and felt as if he could have played. He said he kept himself in better shape coming back from this injury than he did last year, when he missed time with a strained left elbow and broken left arm.

Nevin was moved from third base to left field in spring training, the second time he made way for third baseman Sean Burroughs.
