Trammell scratched from starting lineup, might be headed for restricted list

June 29, 2003

NEW YORK (AP) -- Bubba Trammell was scratched from the New York Yankees' starting lineup Sunday night and was apparently headed to the restricted list because of an unspecified personal problem.

Trammell was supposed to start in left field against the Mets. But before the game, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman received a call from Trammell's agent, Ed Hardison, saying the player would not be at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees said they planned to make an application to the commissioner's office Monday to put Trammell on the restricted list. He would be ineligible to play while on it.

``He's not here and I don't know any more than that,'' Cashman said.

Cashman said Trammell's situation was not related to a death, but did not provide any other details.

The restricted list is rarely used and players can remain on it for an indefinite period, provided their team ``certifies that unusual circumstances exist,'' according to major league rules.

Trammell was acquired in mid-March in a trade that sent outfielder Rondell White to San Diego. Trammell is batting .200 with no home runs and five RBIs in 55 at-bats.

Trammell had not played in the previous seven games for the Yankees. He had two hits in his last 21 at-bats.

In May, Philadelphia reliever Terry Adams was placed on the restricted list for a few days because of a family situation. Tampa Bay outfield prospect Josh Hamilton also went on the restricted list earlier this season.

During spring training, Yankees minor league pitcher Eddi Lantigua was placed on the restricted list because of an age discrepancy in the Dominican Republic. He was out of action about two months.

Jeez, I hope everything's okay  :(

I could be wrong, (wouldn't be the 1st time:D ) but I think he's realizing he isn't getting any playing time, and needs to reassess his situation.

yeah that's what I've been hearing...

sadly, I wouldn't blame him :(. He has to sit on the bench and watch the ever dangerous Todd Zeile starting every other day :hmm:

YANKEE NOTES

With each passing day it looks more likely that Bubba Trammell has played his last game with the Yankees.

Placed on the restricted list when he failed to show up for a game last Sunday and had his agent call the Yankees, the veteran outfielder is undergoing a medical evaluation that union honcho Gene Orza said should be completed shortly. Since the Yankees put Trammell on the restricted list, he isn't getting paid.

"I can't predict what will happen," GM Brian Cashman said yesterday. "All I can tell you is that he is on the restricted list and that's where he belongs. I can't predict the future."

The Yankees would have to file an application to take Trammell off the RL, but Cashman didn't sound like that was being discussed.

"The bottom line is that Bubba is not here and we are not concentrating on Bubba," Cashman said. "He is not here by his choice, not ours and certainly we are not happy about that."

Cashman refused to talk about other teams showing interest in Trammell, who makes $2.5 million this year and is guaranteed $4.75 next season. The assumption is that Trammell was disgruntled about limited playing time but lately some people believe his problems run deeper than a seat on the bench. Neither Trammell, nor his agent, Len Hardison, are talking.

Thanks Kel. Did Trammell actually think he would be getting a lot of playing time? Cashman sure doesn't sound happy about the situation. The sooner he's off our payroll, the better.
