The Phillies New Ballpark
Demolition Commences; Phillies New Ballpark Site Readied for Construction
PHILADELPHIA, PA - NOVEMBER 30, 2001 - Demolition of the Jetro warehouse and wholesale distribution facility, located at the site of the Phillies' New Ballpark, is scheduled to begin on Monday, December 3, signifying a milestone event in the construction of the team's new home.
The New Ballpark will be constructed just east of Veterans Stadium on the north side of Pattison Avenue, between 11th and Darien Streets in South Philadelphia and will span a 21-acre site. The Jetro food business has been relocated to the old Acme warehouse on the south side of Pattison Avenue.
Demolition of the Jetro warehouse, a 225,000-square foot facility, is expected to take approximately six weeks.
The Phillies New Ballpark, a 43,000-seat, natural-grass and dirt-field venue is set to open in April 2004. The Phillies are developing the New Ballpark as a world-class, baseball-only venue that offers fans an intimate and exciting experience.
David Montgomery, Phillies President and Chief Executive Officer, is especially pleased with the commencement of the demolition. He said, "Each step in the development of the New Ballpark has been exciting for the Phillies. The significance of the demolition of Jetro is that the project has moved from the planning phase to the action phase. From this day forward, the vision of the New Ballpark will be transformed into a world-class destination for our fans."
With the Center City skyline as the backdrop, the New Ballpark will feature "bowl-style" seating with the playing field scooped out 23 feet below street level. The cantilevered steel structure of the park will allow for more open seating areas. The New Ballpark is configured to place fans on top of the action. Less than one-third of the seats will be in the upper deck. To allow for a view of the downtown skyline, the field will be oriented with home plate to the south and the outfield to the north, counter-clockwise from the current Veterans Stadium orientation.
The new venue will feature numerous amenities including family-friendly entertainment areas, convenient open concourse concessions, and accommodations to provide for comfortable accessibility for fans. Situated close to the action - a mere 13 feet above street level - all suites will be located between the foul poles with 60 percent of the suites placed in the infield.
The design of the New Ballpark is under the direction of two leading national architectural firms: Philadelphia-based Ewing Cole Cherry Brott and Kansas City, MO-based HOK Sport + Venue + Event. Ewing Cole's work includes Singapore Turf Club, Kranji, Singapore and the following venues in Philadelphia: Fox Chase Cancer Center, Federal Reserve Bank, and Kvaerner Philadelphia Shipyard. They also designed the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall. HOK includes among its work: PNC Park, Pittsburgh; Pacific Bell Park, San Francisco; Enron Field, Houston; Comerica Park, Detroit; Coors Field, Denver; Jacobs Field, Cleveland; and Oriole Park at Camden Yards, Baltimore.
Locally-based L.F. Driscoll, builders of the First Union Center, One Liberty Place and the new Regional Performing Arts Center, has formed a joint venture with Hunt Construction Group to serve as the construction management team. Hunt, a national stadium ballpark construction firm out of Indianapolis, IN, includes among its work: Comerica Park, Pacific Bell Park, Miller Park, Jacobs Field, and Bank One Ballpark. L.F. Driscoll and Hunt Construction Group lead the construction for the new Phillies Ballpark in association with Synterra, Ltd. and Don Todd Associates, Inc.
Synterra has been the recipient of numerous state and national awards for its expertise in planning, design and construction management services. Don Todd Associates, Inc. is a nationally recognized Program and Project/Construction Management firm, currently ranked #57 among Engineering News-Record's "Top 100 CM Firms."
