Well, I wondered when they would raise their ugly heads. The Alan Trammell critics have started to pop up. They bemoan his choice as nothing more than PR or suggest that he's a terrible manager. Both may be true. Both may be wrong. Either way, no one really knows? Why don't we know? Because this team is so awful it's hard to judge their manager.
Let's get a couple of things straight, though. Trammell's hire was indeed part PR. I'm sorry he's a legend around these parts, he just is. He shouldn't have to apologize for that. Also, the odds are he can become as successful as Ken Macha, Willie Randolph or anyone else thought to be a candidate. They are not guaranteed of success either. I'd put Tram's knowledge of the game up against theirs and take my chances.
As for the lousy manager idea, does anyone really think Dusty Baker, Joe Torre or Tony LaRussa could do much better with this group? They are a terrible team. Perhaps, an historically terrible team. Connie Mack and John McGraw together couldn't save this group. Trammell is going to make mistakes. He's a rookie manager. Baker, LaRussa and Torre make questionable decisions, too. They are just given more slack based on their track record.
Let's try to be patient with the newbie manager. Criticize specific moves, if it's appropriate, but don't assume half a season will define Trammell's ability to succeed. Maybe he will be terrible, but let's give him a chance to prove that.
