All-Star Game
FanFest invites baseball's best

By Danny O'Neil

Some of their accomplishments are etched in stone at the Hall of Fame, but their appearances at All-Star FanFest aren't etched anywhere yet.

The 69 former major-league players invited to attend FanFest were named yesterday, a lineup that includes 17 Hall of Famers. The list is tentative and subject to change at any time for FanFest, a five-day event that begins next Friday.

The list of former players includes the game's greats, like Bob Gibson, Brooks Robinson and Warren Spahn.

Some will appear for autograph sessions, others will speak at The Diamond, a regulation-size infield that serves as center stage at FanFest. Some of the legends will speak to an audience and answer questions.

Cameron Phillips, 32, of Victoria, B.C., will be master of ceremonies for all events at the Diamond.

He is an actor much of the past decade who has dueling interests in Shakespeare and baseball. He has six Shakespeare productions on his acting résumé and three FanFests for his baseball skills.

The former players invited to FanFest (Hall of Famer*):

Luis Aparicio*, Vida Blue, Joe Black, Phil Bradley, Ralph Branca, Lou Brock*, Bert Campaneris, Gary Carter, Rico Carty, Cesar Cedeno, Orlando Cepeda*, David Concepcion, Julio Cruz, Ron Darling, Dom DiMaggio, Carl Erskine, Bob Feller*, Wilmer Fields, Rollie Fingers*, George Foster, Steve Garvey, Bob Gibson*, Goose Gossage, Pedro Guerrero, Ozzie Guillen, Dave Henderson, Keith Hernandez, Ferguson Jenkins*, Tommy John, Lou Johnson, Ruppert Jones, Cecil Kaiser, Harmon Killebrew*, Don Larsen, Charlie Lea, Sparky Lyle, Fred Lynn, Steve Lyons, Juan Marichal*, Don Mattingly, Sam McDowell, Tug McGraw, Minnie Minoso, Dale Murphy, Graig Nettles, Dave Nilsson, Ben Oglivie, Tony Oliva, Tom Paciorek, Jim Palmer*, Tony Perez*, Gaylord Perry*, Harold Reynolds, Jim Rice, Billy Ripken, Robin Roberts*, Brooks Robinson*, Cookie Rojas, Manny Sanguillen, Enos Slaughter*, Eugene Smith, Ozzie Smith, Warren Spahn*, Bobby Thomson, Luis Tiant, Frank Torre, Dave Valle, Earl Wilson, Dave Winfield* (2001 inductee).

Notes

• The All-Star Game national anthem goes pop again this year as R&B singer Mya was chosen to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" on July 10 at Safeco Field. Last year, Brandy performed the national anthem, and the year before it was disco diva Donna Summer. Diana Krall will sing the Canadian national anthem.
