View Full Version : Last night's game is why this team can't contend

Sorry guys ... (hey, this rant would've been a lot worse if not for the morons in Milwaukee pressing charges)

But we got 11 innings of fantastically pitched baseball ... no way we should've blown that.

Rusch pitching with an ERA well over 8 ... no way we should've blown the chance to get within 4 1/2 games of St. Louis.

Too many missed opportunities all season long, plain and simple, for this team to make a run ... how in the hell do you lose to the Brewers when Rusch is pitching?

Just can't see this team making up the 6 1/2 games. The top three teams are MUCH more talented than the Pirates, and come the end of the month, they will only be ADDING to their talent, which is ALREADY several games better than the Pirates talent. And what are the chances DL adds players? None.

Must win today. Then a sweep of Houston, as unlikely as it is, will make up for splitting this series ... but we can't have a 4-3 road trip when we play Milwaukee for 4 of those games.

Similar to my point in another thread. We have improved, but not enough. If we trade we need guys for the future. If they can help now that is great, but they need to be guys for the future.

Building for the future is not even as easy as it may seem, however. Only 7 players on this team are already under contract for next season. 18 guys are either free agents, arbitration eligible or have options after the season. So, who do you build around??

The best that I can think of the 7 would be Giles, Kendall, Benson.... and ummmm....

How do you build for the future when you don't even know much beyond that??

Who you build around is Giles, Kendall, Ramirez (yes, he is someone to rely on next season), Wells, Benson, Fogg, Suppan, maybe D'Amico, and Mike Lincoln and Sauerbeck in the bullpen. Suppan/D'Amico and Sauerbeck could be traded ... though I prefer to keep Suppan.

Then call up Davis, Redman (one more shot ... still think he will be a bust), Sanchez, etc.

Josh, you missed the point. We don;t know how many of those guys who are currently on the roster will even BE here next season because they are not under contract. Sort of tough to build a team in July when you dont know who will be signed come November.

And that's why there's trades, so we'll have two months worth of auditions in CF, RF, the fifth spot in the rotation, and the closer ... that way, DL has an idea of what next year's team will be.

Why wait until next spring to see if Davis can play RF when we have almost three months now to see?

What does Davis playing RF for the rest of the season have anything to do with trading Kenny Lofton (who plays CF) 3 weeks before the trade deadline when you are trailing the first place team by only 5.5 games?

The Pirates are 6 games back for now ... depending on how Houston does tonight. Houston's in first now, not St. Louis.

And letting Davis get some starts in RF has to do with trying to build for the future.

I know they are only 6... but I am trying to be positive.

haha

Like I said, Josh, I am not saying don't build for the future. I am saying don't trade Lofton 3 weeks before you need to in order to build for the future. Ya never know what could happen in 3 weeks.

Wish I could be positive .. winning 3 of 4 from Milwaukee would've been nice.

I agree to not trade Lofton now ... the demand should be higher July 31 than it is now too. Can't imagine any teams except the Cubs have already made inquiries about him ... make teams bid against each other.
