BOSTON -- Eddie Popowski, who spent his entire 64-year career in the Red Sox organization, passed away Tuesday morning. He was 88.
Popowski's pro baseball career dated back to 1937. The only season he was not associated with the game was 1942, when he served in the military.
The Sayreville, N.J. native was a player, coach and manager with the Red Sox. His best season as a player was 1945 when he hit .321 as a player-manager of the Roanoke Red Sox. He managed the Red Sox for nine games in 1969 and one game in 1973.
"Today is just a sad day," said Johnny Pesky, who like Popowski was serving the organization as a special assignment instructor. "I feel badly. He and (special instructor Charles) Wagner are the longest continuous employees in the organization.
"I remember the first year I met him was 1940," added Pesky. "I was just out of high school and that was my rookie year. He was the second baseman and Eddie Pellagrini was the shortstop. He was always an active little guy. I coached with him with the Red Sox and really enjoyed it."
The Red Sox named the main field at their minor league complex in Fort Myers, FL after him in March 1997 and then honored Popowski and his family on his 85th birthday in 1998 at Fenway Park.
