Veteran outfielder adds punch to lineup

BALTIMORE -- Looking to bolster a depleted outfield, the Orioles on Tuesday announced they signed free-agent outfielder Marty Cordova to a three-year deal beginning with the 2002 season.

Cordova, who was drafted by the Twins in 1989, was signed by the Indians as a free agent before last season and batted .301 with 20 homers and 69 RBIs in 122 games. He started 75 games in left field and 23 in right.

Cordova, 32, won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1995 while with Minnesota, where he hit .277 with 24 home runs and 84 RBIs. He batted a career-high .309 and had a career-high 111 RBIs in 1996, before being hampered by foot and neck injuries. While with the Twins, Cordova established a solid relationship with then-hitting coach Terry Crowley, currently with Baltimore in the same capacity.

"Marty Cordova is a solid veteran hitter and fielder who will provide more punch to our lineup," Orioles Vice President for Baseball Operations Syd Thrift said. "He proved last year that he has regained his top performance level and he is looking forward to working again with our hitting coach, Terry Crowley, with whom he worked closely and had great success in Minnesota."

The Orioles lost outfielder Chris Richard for half of the 2002 season because he underwent surgery to repair damage to the rotator cuff in his left shoulder, and the team released longtime outfielder Brady Anderson on Nov. 15. This leaves Baltimore without any definite starters for 2002, though it is assumed Cordova will project as a starter in one of the corners.

Thanks, Gary! I was just going to post this!

This is such a good signing for the O's, I think. They need a solid outfielder... and the fact that he's going to be working with Terry Crowley again is fabulous. Guys apparently love working with Crow.
