Batista Pays the Blue Jays Back

Toronto was hoping Tony Batista would rediscover his All-Star swing -- but not for Baltimore.

Batista hit a tiebreaking two-run homer Wednesday for the team that claimed him off waivers two days before, lifting the
Orioles to a 7-3 victory over the Blue Jays.

''We rolled the dice and we thought we could get him to Triple-A, and maybe he could get straightened out, but it seems
as though he's got a little more intensity, and he's swinging the bat pretty well,'' Toronto manager Buck Martinez said.

Batista, in the second year of a four-year $16 million contract, was hitting .207 for the Blue Jays with 13 home runs
before they put him on irrevocable waivers. Last season, the third baseman hit 41 homers and drove in 114 runs.

''I don't know what's going on with the Blue Jays, but he leads us in homers and RBIs,'' Baltimore starter Jose Mercedes
said. ''How can you give up on a guy like that?''

Mercedes (4-8) won his third straight start. Mercedes, who retired 15 straight during one stretch, allowed three runs on
five hits in 7 2-3 innings.
