PHILADELPHIA -- Congratulations. The Phillies have made you the general manager for the All-Veterans Stadium Team. Your vote can help decide the best Phillies players at each position to ever have played at the Vet -- and the voting has begun on phillies.com.
This GM gig may sound like a lot of fun, but there are some tough decisions involved.
Do you want Phillies manager Larry Bowa at shortstop? Bowa, who played more games at the position than any other Phillie, ranks fifth in team history in hits, including the first in Veterans Stadium history. What about two-time All-Star Jimmy Rollins? Or how about Kevin Stocker, the shortstop on the 1993 NL championship team?
The job doesn't get any easier.
What about your catcher? Do you like Bob Boone, a member of the 1980 World Series champions, or would you prefer Darren "Dutch" Daulton, a clubhouse leader of the 1993 NL champions? Don't forget current backstop Mike Lieberthal -- twice an All-Star.
There should also be a battle at first base, as fans can choose from Dick Allen (with the Phillies in 1975-76), Richie Hebner (1977-78), all-time hit king Pete Rose (1979-83), John Kruk (1989-94) -- .316 batting average, 100 runs and 85 RBIs in 1993 -- and Rico Brogna (1997-2000).
The choice at right field is Bake McBride (.309 average, 171 hits, 33 doubles and 87 RBIs in 1980), Von Hayes (107 runs, 186 hits, 46 doubles, and 98 RBIs in 1986), Glenn Wilson (All-Star in 1985), Jim Eisenreich (hit .318 in run to '93 World Series), or Bobby Abreu (.307 career batting average).
Fans can vote on 12 positions for the All-Vet Team: manager, catcher, first base, second base, shortstop, third base, left field, center field, right field, starting left-handed and right-handed pitchers and a reliever. If your choice isn't on the ballot, you can give a write-in vote by checking the "Other" box and typing the player's name in the space provided.
The winners of the fan balloting will be introduced prior to the final Saturday game at the Stadium, against the Braves at 1:05 p.m. ET on Sept. 27. The pregame ceremony is part of the Final Innings Weekend (Sept. 26-28), marking the last regular-season series played at the Vet.
MAB Paints and Tastykake are the sponsors of the All-Vet Team and Final Innings Weekend.
