Vizcaino returns to Astros in 2002
Infielder agrees to one-year contract
Astros Media Relations
HOUSTON - Houston Astros General Manager Gerry Hunsicker announced Friday that the club has agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Jose Vizcaino. Terms of the deal were not announced.
The 33-year-old Vizcaino batted .277 (71-for-256) over 107 games (47 starts) for the Astros. He notched eight doubles, three triples, one home run and 14 RBI in 2001. The switch-hitter made 38 starts at shortstop and nine at second base.
Vizcaino played in 49 games during the second half of the season, hitting .287 (37-for-129) with seven doubles. In August, he hit .367 (22-for-60) in 19 games (12 starts), including six multi-hit efforts. He was 3-for-4 vs. Montreal on Aug. 3 and 3-for-5 at Atlanta on Aug. 9.
"We are delighted to have Jose back for 2002," Hunsicker said. "He provides veteran leadership for our young infielders and gives us a lefthanded hitting option at several infield positions."
Signed as a free agent by Houston on Nov. 20, 2000, Vizcaino has a lifetime Major League average of .270 over 1,288 games with 141 doubles, 37 triples, 22 home runs and 353 RBI. He is a veteran of more than 11 big league seasons.
He spent part of the 2000 campaign with the New York Yankees, for whom he played in nine postseason games for the eventual World Champions. Vizcaino drove in the winning run with a two-out, RBI single in the 12th inning of Game One of the 2000 World Series.
The Los Angeles Dodgers originally signed Vizcaino as a non-drafted free agent on Feb. 18, 1986. He made his big league debut with the Dodgers on Sept. 10, 1989.
