Padres announce 2002 minor league coaching staffs

Padres Media Relations

The San Diego Padres today announced their staff of minor league managers, coaches, trainers and roving instructors for the 2002 season. Director of Player Development Tye Waller made the announcement.

Tom Brown returns for a third season as minor league pitching coordinator. Dave Magadan, who concluded a 16-year major league career in 2001, will serve as minor league hitting instructor. Infield instructor Tony Franklin and outfield/baserunning instructor Doug Dascenzo both return in 2001 with Lance Cacanindin serving as a roving trainer and Sean Cochran serving as minor league strength and conditioning coordinator.

Triple-A Portland manager Rick Sweet returns for a second season with the Beavers. He'll be joined by pitching coach Dave Rajsich, who spent the last two years at Double-A Mobile, and coach Roy Howell, who served at Portland in 2001 after beginning his coaching career at Mobile in 2000. Trainer John Maxwell returns to Portland for a second season, his eighth year as a Padres minor league trainer.

Craig Colbert, who managed Single-A Lake Elsinore to the California League's co-championship in 2001, advances to Double-A Mobile in 2002 with his Lake Elsinore pitching coach Darren Balsley also making the jump. In his fifth season as a Padres minor league trainer, Brian Komprood returns to Mobile for a second season.

George Hendrick, San Diego's minor league hitting coordinator in 2001, makes his managerial debut at Single-A Lake Elsinore in 2002. In his third season with the Padres, Mike Harkey will serve as the Storm's pitching coach after filling that role at Single-A Fort Wayne last season. Former Padre Rob Deer will serve as a coach, and Jason Haeussinger returns for a second season as trainer, his eighth year in the Padres organization.

After guiding Double-A Mobile in 2001, Tracy Woodson takes the reins at Single-A Fort Wayne in 2002. Gary Lance will serve as pitching coach, Tom Tornincasa returns as a coach and Will Sinon is back for a second season as the Wizards' trainer.

Manager Jeff Gardner, pitching coach Urbano Lugo and trainer Wade Yamasaki all return for a second consecutive season at short-season Single-A Eugene along with coach Jake Molina, who managed Idaho Falls in 2001.

Don Werner will manage rookie-level Idaho Falls in 2002, a role he filled for four years before taking over Single-A Fort Wayne at mid-season in 2001. His staff includes returning coach Ben Oglivie and new pitching coach Carlos Reyes, who enjoyed three separate stints with the Padres in 1998, 1999 and 2000 before retiring in 2001. Paul Navarro will serve as trainer at Idaho Falls for the second consecutive season, his third year with the organization.

Pablo Cruz will serve as the Padres' Dominican Summer League coordinator. Ismael Cruz will serve as manager with pitching coach Juan Melo, coach Jose Mateo and trainer Roberto Jimenez.
