NEW YORK -- Jean Afterman, a former aide to agent Don Nomura, was hired Wednesday by the New York Yankees as their assistant general manager.

Afterman replaces Kim Ng, who resigned after four years as the assistant to general manager Brian Cashman and was hired Wednesday as assistant GM of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The only other woman who is an assistant GM in the majors is Boston's Elaine Weddington Steward.

"Jean Afterman's abilities as a lawyer and negotiator, as well as her expertise in the Far East can only strengthen the abilities of the New York Yankees," Cashman said,

Afterman worked with Nomura from 1994-99, and the agency's clients included Hideo Nomo, Hideki Irabu, Alfonso Soriano and Masato Yoshii. She is a a 1979 California graduate and earned her law degree from San Francisco in 1991.
