If they spend the money PP on some FA then yes they will be MUCH better. I agree with you on that. This is a offense that still put up 30 points a game without Moss. Culpepper threw for 4,000 + yards and would have been the walk away MVP if some guy named Payton didnt throw for all those TD's...

Sure I am happy they traded Moss but they didnt get what they could for him... They traded away the best WR in football off one of the best offense in football and still the Vikings have a great offense but there defense is still the worst if not now worse yet because they will now let one of the few playmakers go that was in that horid backfield...

That is what we are getting at the Vikings didnt get a thing in return for Moss. Instead of getting some stiff from the Raiders that could have been cut we could have got someone at least....

Culpepper threw for 4,000 + yards and only 700 of them was to Moss was something I wanted to add in there also...

Chris Hovan? Guy is a stiff. Anyhoo, AWESOME TRADE GETTING RID OF RANDY! You guys raped the Faiders.

Are you serious? Everyone is laughing at the Vikings for what they got in return. I emailed Mike Garafolo, who covers the Giants for the Newark Star-Ledger in New Jersey today and he told me the Vikings should have done a better job getting guys in return. Listen it was time for Randy to go, but if you are going to trade Randy, you better get players that are ready to produce right now in the NFL. I am talking about guys like Charles Woodson and Jerry Porter. Those two should have been there as part of the trade especially Porter. Vikings could get Porter and then draft this kid from the University of Texas, Derrick Johnson, who is a linebacker. Vikings are not going to spend money at all this offseason and get a legitimate wide receiver (i.e. Mason, Burress, Muhammed) in the FA market. They are likely going to draft a WR in Mike Williams or settle with Burelson and this kid, Kelly Campbell.

You have to wonder if Red is covering himself in case the Fowler deall doesn't go through. We all know that Red was trying to get all the money out of the franchise that he could, hence beingn $20 million under the cap in 2004. The way the charge for Moss in 2005 will work if he is traded: there will be a "ghost" charge of $9 million against the 2005 cap. That's bonus moneys paid over the length of his contract, charged to the year he is traded even though the Vikings don't pay it all out. In other words, the Vikes will be another $9 mil under the cap in real dollars but on paper it will look like we spent the money. Red is a master manipulator.

TC

I hate Red McCombs. If there are two guys that I love to see rot in hell, it's Red and Jose Canseco. Red is such a a$$ that's its scary. I wouldn't want to be a friend of his at all. How does his wife and his family put up with the lying sack of crap? You know who Red McCombs remind me of? He reminds me of Dr. Kimberly Shaw from Melrose Place. Dr. Shaw, who was played by Marcia Cross (my favorite actress), would do anything to hurt people and stab people in the back. That's what Red McCombs is all about. How does Red live with this each day? Doesn't he have conscience? Doesn't he have one ounce of integrity? Doesn't he has any honesty or values? I would hate to be like him.

I hate Red so much that I have more respect for Norm Green, who moved the NHL's North Stars to Dallas than Red.

The Vikings and the Press had made so much noise about Moss being a bad guy that every team but the Raiders were low-balling the Vikes. the other offers were 2nd thru 4th rounders and the same kind of players. Sometimes if you badmouth someone too long, it affects his value.

The Raiders deal was probably the best deal that they could have done, but even then, that deal is not good enough. I am not into draft picks. I want to win now not 5 years from now. Jerry Porter and Charles Woodson are guys that can win now.

Now if we can sign a legitimate WR in the market and than draft Derrick Johnson, then the deal won't be that bad. Unfortunately, I don't see the Vikings being active in the market especially if that slimeball McCombs is there.

Lets look at this also now....

Where does E.J. go? Does he go outside to take Cleyborn's spot? or does this new guy? Or does one of them take the bench? I think Chris is gone now.

I think E.J. should go away. What has he done in his tenure here? I keep waiting for him to make an impact, but he has done nothing

Durango53
02-25-2005, 12:28 PM
They cant give up on E.J. He looked very good at times this year and then looked very bad at times this year. He is a very young guy that can move and that is something this team hast had in a long time. And also this was his very first year of being the full time starter. I am not one to give up on a guy that shows he might be able to do something only after one year....

I would love the move if the Vikings sign a FA (Which they will have to do to get up in the cap so I dont see why they cant get Burress and then go after two high defense picks. If that is the case then this move will pay off and should make this team MUCH better. But if they dont sign a solid guy in the FA then they will have to draft a guy for WR and then just have one pick for defense which that will make this a bad trade then.

Mock Draft from Fox Sports

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/3417548

7. Vikings
(from Raiders) Mike Williams* WR USC 9th (+2) 7th / 21st
After acquiring this pick from Oakland in the blockbuster Randy Moss trade, the Vikings can groom his big-play replacement. Despite a year off, Williams remains an explosive and dynamic receiver with elite size, strength, hand-eye coordination and body control.

18. Vikings Shawne Merriman* DE Maryland 18th SAME 18th / 23rd
With their second first-round pick, Merriman would be a great value for the Vikings here. He could be a drive stopper and add a big-play dimension to their defense.

Say this draft goes like this. I would say this trade was a bust If the Vikings don’t sign a big name D player then they are just losing that draft pick at 7. Because they have to draft someone to take the place of a WR. If they sign a big name WR with FA then they could take two D players with the first two picks. I am harping on the WR because there are better WR out there with FA than defense players.

I still stand by my statement this could work out great for the Vikings only if they get some of those FA to fill some key spots…

LesPaul
02-25-2005, 02:58 PM
ya the vikes should go after Bruce or any of the WR's cut by the Titans. You gave up the best WR in the league, thus making your offense take a huge hit, so you better get some solid D guys in the draft otherwise your D still sucks and you no longer have your big play man to keep you in the game.

Something I just thought of as well, this was the first season IMO that the Vikings finally had a solid 2nd WR for Moss in Burleson since Carter left. We can only imagine now what a FULL season with this combo would have been like since Moss was injured most of this one...

If they think the team's sour attitude was all Moss then maybe that is fixed but then the team just becomes like the early 90's teams where we scrap together a 9-7 season, make the wildcard, and get beat. I saw in an article that Moss liked Minnesota but just couldn't stand losing...suck it up man. Losing reminds you that you have to work at winning.

Is it irony that a QB that got his start with the Vikings taking turn throwin to the Carter's now finds himself a seasoned veteran throwin to talent tamed by one of the Carters?

Just one last opinion, I think Moss will eat up the Raider Nation atmosphere and realize if he pulls some of the stuff he did in Minny some of those scary lookin fans in the crowd will come down and kick his arse. Somehow I think it will all get to his head and in a few years we will say that Moss played his best years in Minny.

• "It's interesting that Vikings owner Red McCombs apparently did not confide in prospective buyer Reggie Fowler before he agreed to trade Randy Moss."

I spoke to TC on AIM yesterday about Red. I spent time bashing Red as a person and as a owner. This guy amazes me with his stunts. Reggie Fowler just found out what we all know about Red. He is a scum and he is a liar. He is a guy that has no conscience or integrity. He is simply a crook. A guy that will stop at nothing to do stunts like that. How does Red lives with himself each day is beyond me? God I really hate him. Reggie is going to be the new owner soon so why at least Red did not have the courtesy to tell Reggie about Randy. Why? Reggie paid Red that type of amount to buy the team. The least Red can do is tell him. God I hope the sale is approved real soon. God know he can trade Daunte for nothing if he wishes. I wouldn't put anything past Red McCombs.

I can see that Timber but I dont see the League aproving the deal if Reggie raised a big stink about it. I am not a Red fan also but I dont think the league will let this trade go though if Fowler didnt want it to and started to complain about it.

Never a dull moment with the Vikings.

Once again, a Viking player is arrested this off-season. Vikings wide receive Kelly Campbell was arrested on drug and weapon charges. This incident can't help his chances of making the team next year. It's bad enough Tice has publically savaged him in the media this year, but now this incident has to be a seed for his departure.

Why is it every year a Viking has to be in a police blotter during the offseason? You saw the incident with the Arctic Blast. You saw the incident where three Vikings beat the daylights out of this guy in a nightclub. You saw Kenny Mixon being arrested for DWI. It goes on and on and on. I am tired of it. How irresponsible Vikings players are? I mean how stupid they are. What are they thinking smoking pot and collecting guns or drinking alcohol? Don't they realize that stuff like that is not good for them? Is staying at home and acting responsible that hard in the off-season?

It's gone from amusing to pathetic.

The impending trade of WR Randy Moss will dramatically affect the team's makeup, both on and off the field. In the locker room, QB Daunte Culpepper and C Matt Birk will step up as the unquestioned leaders. On the field, the team almost certainly will lose some explosiveness on offense. None of the team's remaining receivers, nor anyone they might draft, has the kind of downfield discipline, hands and speed that Moss displays when he's healthy. WR Nate Burleson, who led the team with 1,001 receiving yards in 2004, will step up as the No. 1 receiver. Hands and disciplined route running, not speed, are Burleson's best attributes. WR Marcus Robinson also is capable of making big plays, and the team almost certainly will have to look for an explosive receiver in the draft and/or free agency. . . .

I love the idea of Matt and Culpepper being in charge and I hope now that the hammer comes down on all players the same and not drafting around Moss now....

Durango53
02-28-2005, 12:34 PM
LB Napoleon Harris, set to be acquired from Oakland in exchange for Moss, figures to plug in as a starter at weakside linebacker. Harris is best suited to play middle linebacker, but the team has committed to E.J. Henderson. It is possible, but unlikely, that Henderson could move to the outside. .

I like this idea out of any I guess... Still not a fan of Harris at all. A overated young LB. I hope he comes in and blows the ideas I have about him apart and I do know he has been playing in a 3-4 that he didnt know and was hurt so he might find his grove here again. I hope anyway.

But TC might be able to give some insite on this I have heard a rumor that the Vikings might be going to a 3-4?

Durango53

Re-arranging the team's receiving corps will be the job of new WR coach Wes Chandler, who ironically was hired because the team figured he could deal well with Moss.
Well I hope he can just get the group to step up. No one man is going to take the spot of Moss but they have a group that can. Nate has the hands, Robinson has the height and Camble has the speed. If they all work together they can be that team that keep scoring 30 points a game without Moss. And if they get a good FA Wr in Plexco or draft a Williams it could be a great fit for this team.

I also feel that resigning Wiggins is a must and would excite me to have Wiggins and Jimmy in the duel TE sets. Both sure hands and dumpoffs for Culpepper when the running game has been set up could be great and also would be a HUGE help in the red zone or the under 10 which they had some problems with this year.

Durango53
02-28-2005, 12:42 PM
The trade of Moss will give the team more options in the draft. In addition to its own No. 18 pick, the team will also get the No. 7 overall pick. That spot should give it a chance at a dynamic receiver or safety. Suddenly, the team needs a deep threat on offense. No other player under contract gives it the kind of vertical threat that Moss had. Either Michigan WR Braylon Edwards or USC WR Mike Williams would be an ideal fit for the offense. Edwards would be the preferred candidate, but he might be gone by the time the No. 7 pick comes around.

I love the size of Williams and think he would be the guy I would want.

Durango53
02-28-2005, 01:01 PM
The Vikings plan to tender qualifying contract offers today to all seven of their restricted free agents, including wide receiver Kelly Campbell, who was arrested Thursday night in Atlanta on weapon and drug charges.

Kicker Jose Cortez, offensive lineman Adam Haayer, quarterback Shaun Hill, safety Willie Offord, safety Brian Russell and cornerback Brian Williams are the other restricted free agents.

Tendering an offer gives a team the right of first refusal on any contracts offered by other teams.

Need Brian Williams I feel and Offord must get Cambell rest give or take they are guys that have made this team what it is. If they go the Vikings will sign someone else to take there spot...

Rob Brzezinski isn't naming names, but the Vikings' vice president of football operations will make one promise.

With nearly $36 million to spend under the NFL's salary cap, the Vikings will be an active participant when the free-agent signing period begins Wednesday.

"We will be a player," Brzezinski said Sunday at the NFL scouting combine. "There are certain guys that we like, certain positions that can help us. We plan on being aggressive and being a player right away."

"Re-signing our own players is the priority," Brzezinski said. "We had just finished up a roster plan. Kicking that into gear, laying out a schedule for how we'll approach free agency and when people may be coming in, coordinating those schedules with coach Tice and the coaching staff. Really, at this time, we're planning out what we visualize the first couple of weeks of March to look like."

Love the sound of this!!!!!! The Vikings must be big players.

Two reasons. They must get the players to = out this trade they did and NOT lose any of the fan base.

And along the fan base they must keep it where it is for ANY chance for a new home!!!!

are you sure that would be a good thing? i found this article on Plexico, kind of hits the reasons the Steelers aren't worried about getting him back:
Burress (http://steelers.scout.com/2/355617.html)

Durango53
02-28-2005, 01:27 PM
Ya I am. First off I think he will be coming into a team that is now going to be run by Culpepper and Birk. I know about Burress me me way but I think he can fit in. I love his size and speed. He should be able to jump and such. I think Culpepper can handle him.

Burress will get his passes I feel in MN if the Vikings sign him and then dont draft a WR in the first round. (No need for that then).

And the Vikings have the money. I think he will shine with Culpepper as a QB. He will be at a new team and want to step up I feel. I think he would be a great fit for the Vikings... Adding on to what the Vikings have and fill that missing piece...

Durango53
02-28-2005, 01:29 PM
Randy Moss enjoyed his time with the Vikings but had grown weary of owner Red McCombs' unwillingness to spend big money on free agents, the receiver's agent said Friday.

"I think that part of his frustration with the organization is that they're [over $30 million] under the salary cap," Dante DiTrapano told the Associated Press. "You need good players to advance in the playoffs and you can get a heck of a lot of good players for $30 million. He felt they weren't spending the money to get a supporting cast to advance. If they don't score 40 points, they're not going to win the game."

Tired of dealing with his distracting antics, the Vikings reportedly have agreed to trade Moss to the Oakland Raiders. Neither team has confirmed the deal, which cannot be announced until Wednesday.

DiTrapano said Moss had some reservations upon first hearing of his trade to the Raiders, but those were eliminated after a conversation with Raiders executive Mike Lombardi. And on Thursday night former Raiders greats Fred Biletnikoff and Willie Brown flew to Boca Raton, Fla., to have dinner with Moss.

"Now Randy wishes the season started next month. He can't wait to get going," said DiTrapano, who said Moss will wear No. 18 in Oakland. Jerry Porter wears No. 84.

I think this has more to say than anything else about Moss and this team...

Moss always said he didnt care if he got the ball at all in a game as long as they won.

Durango53

Tice said he had 16 player interviews scheduled for Friday night and 20 for Saturday night. He paid close attention to the workouts for kickers and punters Friday.

I think the Vikings must burn a draft pick (3rd round or even 2nd round) for the best kicker in the draft!!!! This has hurt the team next to the D the most the past few years...

Durango53
02-28-2005, 01:35 PM
Williams met with Vikings coach Mike Tice on Thursday night. Tice is prohibited by NFL rules from talking about the Moss trade until it is official. Williams isn't.

Williams said Tice asked him about the possibility of becoming the guy who replaces Moss.

"I told him I wouldn't be trying to fill Randy Moss' shoes," Williams said. "Those shoes are cut to his feet. That's his situation. I think I'd bring my own pair. I'd bring my own attitude, my own playing style, and my own demeanor about myself and just really be me."

As a big receiver (6-4½, 229) with speed, the comparisons to Moss are inevitable, Williams said.

New Vikings receivers coach Wes Chandler said he was impressed with Williams and is not concerned in the least that he didn't play last season because he got tangled up in the Maurice Clarett eligibility court battle.

I dont know about this pick. I feel if he is there they should take him but then I feel the trade would be a bust if they dont sign a big name d player for defense but there isnt that many out there... But that is just me... :notme:

Durango53
02-28-2005, 01:42 PM
Whether it's based on inside information or wishful thinking, coach Mike Tice doesn't see the Vikings losing tight end Jermaine Wiggins in free agency.

A day after Wiggins' agent said the Vikings' leading receiver from last season likely would hit the free-agent market Wednesday, Tice expressed optimism that a contract still could be worked out.

Got to get this done....

Durango53
02-28-2005, 01:43 PM
Depending on his price tag and the condition of his broken foot, the Vikings could get in the bidding for cornerback Ty Law, who was released Friday by the New England Patriots.

Law, who made four Pro Bowl appearances in 10 seasons with the Patriots, missed the final 12 games of last season after breaking his foot and would have cost the team $12.5 million under the salary cap.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to vigorously pursue Law, 31, who had a franchise-record 36 interceptions during his Patriots career.

I would like this move and heck move Law to FS even or even Brian Williams...

Durango53
03-01-2005, 12:44 PM
I have been thinking....

I dont think the Vikings draft Williams with the second round....

For the past two years Tice has been great in hiding who they wanted to draft with the first round. So much that they flew in guys to work out that they wasnt going to draft at all.

I think the Vikings have a plan on what is going on and are just mum on it.....

Or I hope at least!!!!!!!

Durango53
03-01-2005, 12:46 PM
This is what I have been trying to say

While at the NFL scouting combine, Tice spent some time with Southern Cal receiver Mike Williams, who said Tice talked to him about replacing Moss. For that to happen, the Vikings would draft Williams with the No. 7 pick.

That's one way to go, but the Vikings should strongly consider using some of their $36 million to sign a wide receiver such as Derrick Mason. Or Plaxico Burress. Or Isaac Bruce, who, at 32, still can put up terrific numbers.

Aside from those receivers, this isn't a standout year for free agents, particularly on defense. So, if the Vikings sign Mason or one of the others, they can use the seventh pick on defense. Anyone who knows a blitz from a blintz will tell you that's the side of the ball most in need of renovation. Other than Kevin Williams and Antoine Winfield, none of the Vikings' defensive starters are anything special.

Fowler to get boost in money?

Georgia company plans to buy part of Spiral; value jumps to $1.2 billion

A Georgia financial company said this week it has sent the NFL a document indicating it plans to buy part of a business owned by Reggie Fowler— a deal that could help Fowler's bid to buy the Vikings.

Details of the deal aren't clear. The Sports Business Journal earlier this week reported that UBG Financial Corp. of suburban Atlanta plans to invest $300 million for a 25 percent stake in Spiral Aviation Training Co., valuing Fowler's aviation company at $1.2 billion.

Wide receiver, safety and kicker are considered the team's top needs, but two of the first players to visit Winter Park could be Buffalo defensive tackle Pat Williams and Washington linebacker Antonio Pierce, whom the Vikings tried to sign last season as a restricted free agent.

Running down the need positions, Kenoy Kennedy (Denver) could be a good fit at safety, and the Vikings are one of a number of teams interested in kicker Jay Feely (Atlanta).

Plaxico Burress (Pittsburgh) is considered the top free-agent wide receiver, followed by Derrick Mason, who was recently released by Tennessee, and T.J. Houshmandzadeh (Cincinnati).

Fred Smoot (Washington) is regarded as the top available cornerback, should the Vikings decide to go that route, and they have an interest in Ty Law, who was released last week by New England.

They also might have to add tight end to their shopping list, with Jermaine Wiggins set to explore the free-agent market.

Wiggins, who caught a team-high 71 passes last season, expressed regret that he and the Vikings weren't able to reach agreement on a long-term contract.

How huge would it be to see Smoot or Antonio Pierce? If they got one of these guys I would say ok for the Moss trade. If they got both I would say Moss who?!?!?!?!

Patrick basically said what most Minnesotans think about that jagoff in McCombs. Red is a psychopath and a guy that will stop at nothing to screw everyone. Patrick is hoping the sale goes through. We all hope so. When it does, I am popping the champagne and celebrate Red's departure.

DT Pat Williams to the Minnesota Vikings: The Vikings wanted a bigger run-stuffer next to Kevin Williams in the middle of their defense, and Williams gives them that and more. At 335 pounds -- on a good day -- Williams is a force against the run. The Buffalo Bills didn't want to let him go, so he's a tough loss. The Vikings had to get bigger inside, and Williams gives them that. His ability to occupy blockers will help free up Williams and middle linebacker Napoleon Harris to make plays. This is a good move.

Sucks losing Antonio Pierce but we got one guy I feel we needed. I think we will hear about another big signing in the next day or two.

Red or not the Vikings got to get above the min cap and that means they have to sign some guys and they are making some good moves so far. But in no means am I giving Red any credit for it...

Why is Steelers receiver Plaxico Burress not getting more play on the free-agent market? Burress is 6-5, has the ability to get deep and he's only 27. That adds up to a good combination. But word has it that some teams are scared off by his attitude. The reality is Burress is not a bad guy. Plus, if a coach is secure enough in his own skin, shouldn't he be secure enough to think he can handle any little problem there could be with Burress? The Giants are interested in Burress, which means a possible marriage with Tom Coughlin. If Burress were a problem, Coughlin probably wouldn't take him on -- that much I know. There is some chatter that his off-the-field friends don't exactly Burress to teams. Someone even mentioned he hangs out with Snoop Dog, as if that's a bad thing. I'll say this about Burress: He's good friends with Jaguars running back Fred Taylor, who just might be the nicest guy in the entire league. He can't be a bad guy if he's a friend of Taylor. Teams are missing the boat on Burress, particularly teams like San Diego.

Kind of what I have been thinking all the time about this guy. There is no reason that Culpepper and Birk couldnt pound this guy and I think they will after going though with Moss....

If the Vikings sign Burress they get a guy that can help out the WR a ton. He cant hurt but he can only help... And if they do get him they can do some great freaking things in the draft... I still think there is a trade going to happen to get a 2 rounder for a RB so I would think they could burn 3 high draft picks on some starting D players and with the last pick in the second round (if they trade to get a 2nd round pick) draft that kicker out of Ohio!!!!!

Fans of the Vikings can't say good riddance soon enough to current owner Red McCombs. Say what you want about departed receiver Randy Moss, but he was right about Red. The guy's an embarrassment about how cheaply he's operated the Vikings the past two seasons and how he's messed with head coach Mike Tice.

McCombs said Thursday in Minneapolis that he wanted to fire Tice late in the season, believing it would motivate Moss to perform better. How that would have succeeded, considering Moss was coming off a hamstring injury, is anyone's guess. What McCombs was failing to say is that he was miffed at Moss for mocking him for his cheap ways. McCombs didn't like hearing the truth from his best player, and he didn't think Tice was keeping him under control.
And who would have McCombs elevated to head coach? Scott Linehan, the offensive coordinator, he was too cheap to retain after the playoffs? Linehan almost tripled his salary by jumping to the Miami Dolphins.

Moss did a lot of dumb things in Minnesota, but he had the proper read on McCombs.

And, while we're at it, don't believe all the denials out of Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper. Granted, Culpepper wasn't pushing to trade Moss, but he fully agreed with Tice that a change needed to be made for the Vikings to move forward as a team. Moss had become a distraction in the locker room and Culpepper, despite his friendship with Moss, could see that the lone solution was to trade him. Ultimately, Culpepper couldn't see Moss changing his ways.

A quick hit that I agree with...

I can see Red taking out what Moss said on Tice

Timberwolf

Red just can't stop can he. You heard what he said? He talked about firing Tice in the midseason to get Moss to play to expectations. First off, firing a head coach in the middle of the season does not solve problems as Kevin McHale can attest with the Timberwolves. Second, firing Tice would not make Randy play any better. Randy did fine. His injury just could not make Randy do the things he can be. I had no idea why Red would even say this and why would Red go take a shot at Tice like that. Red is never around the team for the most part except on gamedays when the Vikings are at home.

This fool just goes on and on and on and on. He will stop at nothing. I really hope Reggie Fowler's sale is approved so we may hear the last of this jagoff. I have nothing good to say about Red McCombs as a owner and as a human beng. It's a shame Red has zero integrity, honesty, character, and all.

Red may be a billionare, but I tell ya what. I am glad I don't have any character attributes that Red has.

Durango53

But ya Red could have brought in any coach and Moss I dont think could have done any better for any of them.

The team is focused on utilizing its running game more effectively. Only four teams attempted fewer running plays last season, but the Vikings ranked second overall in the NFL with a 4.7-yard per play rushing average. Without Moss, it seems natural that the team leans more on those formidable numbers -- especially given the stable of running backs expected to return. Even if RB Michael Bennett is traded, the team will have RBs Onterrio Smith and Mewelde Moore to carry the load. With or without Bennett, the running game will be more of a focal point as Loney will ensure the team runs more frequently throughout games as he calls plays.

This will be a very solid team if they go with the run. All the games they won last year to get started out on that great start was because they was a running team....

Vikings coach Mike Tice and vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski denied that the team has closed the door on Plaxico Burress, but it could be a moot point.

Pittsburgh's free-agent receiver will spend Wednesday visiting the New York Giants after Monday's planned visit had to be rescheduled because Burress was ill. His agent and the Giants reportedly have discussed the parameters of a six-year, $21 million contract, but if things don't work out there, the Vikings say they're willing to talk.

"We gained some interest after the initial call came from his agent (last week)," Tice said. "After doing our research on the player — additional research beyond the film study — we didn't feel at this point it was a good fit at the level Rob and the agent were talking."

In other words, if Burress and agent Michael Harrison were willing to lower their asking price, the Vikings would listen.
http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/sports/football/11076851.htm

I like this. I think it should be Burress that is wanting to play for the Vikings so bad. I think he knows that this team can make him look real good a good fit for both parties I feel. And I like that the Vikings are saying man you are just to high right now come down a bit and we can talk. I dont think they will sign him but I like how they are talking to him. Showing him that they are in charge and dont need to bend to him.

Jermaine Wiggins expects to make his first free-agent visits this week, although agent George Mavrikes said Monday that nothing had been finalized.

The Vikings have started auditioning possible replacements for Wiggins, who led the team in receptions last season with 71. Arizona tight end Freddie Jones will visit Winter Park today, and Seattle's Itula Mili could be in later this week.

"These are the best guys out there who can do some of the things Jermaine has done for us," Tice said.

The Vikings still hope to re-sign Wiggins, but the sides are far apart in negotiations on a long-term contract.

I think they can get this done. I hope they can get this done. I think lossing Moss now adds how much more they need Wiggins and we know what we are getting when we sign him so I feel that is worth a bit more cash to throw his way.

After watching some of the best players in free agency swap teams Monday, the Vikings will try to jump into the mix today when Fred Smoot, the best cornerback still available, visits Winter Park.

Smoot, who will turn 26 on April 17, has 16 interceptions in four seasons with the Washington Redskins, including three last season. He rejected a recent contract offer from the Redskins that includes a $10 million bonus.

The Vikings are an NFL-high $31 million under the cap and looking to add another top-level player to a secondary that includes cornerback Antoine Winfield, whom the Vikings grabbed in free agency last season for $34.8 million, including a $10.8 million roster bonus.

Good to see the Vikings hit some home runs in free agency today.

Getting Fred Smoot was a coup. Him and Winfield now form a good duo against the wide receivers in the NFC North.

I love the Jermaine Wiggins re-signing. The Wiggns signing had to happen. He did a very good job in the Vikings offense last year and it seemed Daunte was very comfortable working with him. That signing is important more than ever with Moss being gone since Daunte needs to find a receiver he is comfortable with.

I like the Pat Williams signing last week.

I am hoping we can get Gardner or Plexico Burress at the wide receiver and somehow get Donovan Darius. If we can get that, I will be really pleased. I think we should get a FA to complement Nate Burelson so that we can draft that kid from Texas in Derrick Johnson.

Vikings are doing a very good job spending wisely with their money.

How about Tice being investigated for allegedly scalping tickets to people? That's pretty sad. He has done that for years from what I heard going back to his days as the OL coach. Should he be fired for what he did? No. Should he take a hit like a fine from the NFL? Definitely. I know Tice's salary is the lowest and he makes less than Gophers head coach Glen Mason, but geez. Talk about lack of integrity right there. I am dissapointed that he would do that. Now he is not the first coach to do that, but still.

Durango53

Ok on Tice scalping tickets. I will try to find the link but SI is the one that reported it first. In the artical they say at the end. "Everyone does it"

If that is the case then this is a NO story that the press is getting sick of just reporting what Moss said or what guy went where. Everyone at my work if you need something at home that doesnt cost that much you take home to use. I just took some weather tight home and some wire for my new water heater. Everyone does it and everyone said just take it. It isnt really right but it is something we all do. So for me to get fired because of that isnt right because I am just following the example that was before me.

Also from what I have been reading on the Red deal is that the money people will apporve the deal today and they say that means that Fowler can begain to run the team. And that the owners that have to vote on it wont vote on it until the end of the month. So he could be in charge as of today but not offical until the end of the month...

"This started when [Tice] wasn't the figure he is now," one team source told SI.com. "I can't believe how rampant it's been. Stuff like this has gone on a long time. There's a pretty good amount of people involved. There could be a lot of people affected by this, not just in the NFL's view, but with the IRS as well."

"A lot of teams do it," the assistant told SI.com. "Everybody can do it. Every team has a guy who takes care of moving the tickets. I'd hate to see it end because coaches have always used that as extra money. Coaches do count on that as a little extra deal. [Team] owners will probably stop doing it now, because they don't have to give us those tickets.

You are right Ray it still is illegal. But if they are going to do something to Tice they have to do the same thing to every team in the NFL for the people that sell there tickets. To just point at Tice and say look look look is wrong that is what I am saying.

If the NFL said they didnt know this was going on for years and years is a lie and to do something to one guy is wrong they must do it to everyone who is doing it....

Yes, we are interested in Donovin Darius," said Rob Brzezinski, the Vikings' vice president of football operations. "He is a great player."

Even Tuesday's six-year, $34 million agreement with cornerback Fred Smoot won't deter the Vikings from exploring the possibility of acquiring Darius, one of the NFL's best strong safeties and the Jaguars' designated franchise player the past three seasons.

"Just because we have agreed to terms with Fred Smoot does not mean we won't continue taking action to improve our football team," Brzezinski said. "We aren't done trying to get better."

The Vikings have had no meaningful discussions with Darius or his agent, Tom Condon, but that could change this week. After a hectic Tuesday, the team has no other free agents expected to visit this week.

"This process is out of my hands," Darius said in an e-mail to the Star Tribune on Tuesday. "As pertaining to the interview with Miami, I know that they're interested, but ... this is a process that has to take place within the organization as they count up the cost of giving up a draft pick and signing me to a long term deal.

"I wouldn't read much into it, other than it was my intention to speak and express my interest and 'pass them the baton,' as we say in my track days."

The Vikings have reached for the baton and, apparently, are prepared to run with it.

Wild Wild times in Winter Park!!!!!!!

Good times for the Vikings on the Defense side of the ball....

All these moves are going to help out the weakest part of the Vikings defense and that is the LB core. With Pat Williams there to plug up the middle for the run will help the LB's a ton!!!!

Adding Smoot will help the LB's two ways. Winfield is a great tackler. To when teams ran to the outside on his side he was there and stopped the run most of the time. Smoot isnt as good tackling but is still one of the best CB's there. To that will help to the outside with the LB's. ANd then then covering of the WR by the CB's will help out the LB's a ton. And even with this Moss trade Harrison is a upgrade on the LB core also. EJ had some great times last year and some very poor showings to he should get better and with this help it should help him out a ton.

But the biggest winners are the Safeties. They looked so bad last year because they had to help out the LB's on the running game that they look bad in the passing game because they had to play up so much. These moves are going to make this defense better and more important they will be more consistent....

One more thing for me for now on this Tice thing

Mike Kelly, the Vikings' executive vice president before leaving the team late this past season, backed Tice, saying, "It just smells like a smear campaign to me. I give the report no credibility. In my estimation, this is probably the attempt of some disgruntled staff member, former player or agent trying to get back at the head coach. I have no doubt that the NFL will clear this up promptly in Mike's favor.''

Can anyone say Chris Hovan? I think we all know how mad he was at Tice for benching him and the butt head he has been this year for that.

Not only I think it was him I think he just ended his time in the NFL also.....

He went from one of my favorite players to the biggest piece of crap club in about 6 months...

After what happened with Smoot, you can stop berating the Vikings for being cheapskates. They snapped out of their financial slumber, shedding their reputation as the league's version of Rip Van Winkle when it comes to free agency and making things happen.

All of a sudden, the money spigot is flowing.

And you know what that means. Red McCombs must be pretty dang confident the sale of the team to Reggie Fowler will go through. Ordinarily, it takes a crowbar to pry money out of McCombs' mitts. Tuesday, he was throwing cash around like it was somebody else's.

Besides agreeing to terms with Smoot, who will make it a lot tougher for quarterbacks to strafe their secondary, the Vikings ponied up to persuade tight end Jermaine Wiggins to re-sign with them.

They're also trying to swing a few trades.

Either McCombs is confident Fowler will wind up with the Vikings or somebody needs to check to see if he bonked his head on something and he temporarily has forgotten what a tightwad he is. If it's the latter, he needs a few more bonks to the head.

The Vikings went into Tuesday a league-high $25 million under the salary cap. (It wasn't $31 million as reported in many places.) After locking up Smoot with a six-year deal believed to total $34 million and bringing back Wiggins with a five-year contract worth $7.3 million and restructuring a veteran's existing pact, they'll shrink that cap number nearer to $20 million.

I agree with this. Red might put some money in this team now that he wont own it!!!!

I could very well see a one year deal for Plexco and a trade for DD!!!!!!

But I hope they dont over trade for DD. I would give up a 2nd round pick or even a 3rd round with player for DD.

More is coming out proving this story is a BS story and it was made up by some guy (Hovan) that had a ax to grind...

If I'm guilty of anything," Tice said, "I am guilty of telling coaches that it's OK to sell their tickets." Tice said he gave the name of the person who purchases the tickets for the California ticket agency to his assistants.

He admitted he had been involved in Super Bowl ticket scalping as assistant coach -- "just as all the coaches in this league have done."

On KFan they also was talking some about this. They have a lot of the same takes I have on this...

The inside guy (Hovan) said Tice flew to NY or some town one time to sell tickets last year for the team. And this has been debunked quickly. As many of the claims the inside guy is making....

Some guy is pissed because he was benched, put on a inactive list because he sucked and he thought he was a lot better than he really was... Huh who could that be?

Len Pasquarelli on Plaxico
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=pasquarelli_len&id=2004952
One of the mysteries of the first few days of free agency is the dearth of action that Pittsburgh wide receiver Plaxico Burress is garnering on the market. The wide receiver pool has been quickly drained by signings (Derrick Mason in Baltimore and Muhsin Muhammad in Chicago) and re-signings (T.J. Houshmandzadeh in Cincinnati and Jerry Porter with Oakland) and trades (Randy Moss to the Raiders). It's hard to argue that Burress isn't the best wideout still available. But the phone isn't exactly ringing off the hook. There have been a few exploratory calls to agent Michael Harrison, but nothing of substance yet, and teams are telling Burress' new representative they have other priorities to address and might not be ready to visit with the Steelers veteran until next week. The preliminary discussion that Harrison had with Minnesota officials Thursday, and which was ballyhooed by one wire service, actually was initiated by the agent. The New York Giants unofficially floated some contract parameters this week, ESPN.com has learned, but their proposal averaged less than $4 million per year and the signing bonus was less than $5 million. Burress is said to be seeking a contract that approximates the six-year deal Muhammad inked with the Bears, a deal that includes $12 million in total guarantees and will pay the nine-year veteran $16 million in its first three seasons. Burress has to be wondering, however, whether he'll get anything close to that. "Let's just say [Plaxico] thought he'd either be on a plane by now or already signed," a close Burress friend said Wednesday afternoon, the first day of the signing period. What is somewhat puzzling is that, despite some past off-field indiscretions, Burress was a model citizen for the Steelers in 2004. His reception totals were down, thanks in part to injuries and playing with a rookie quarterback, but he bit his tongue. Taking a page from the book of teammate Hines Ward, he concentrated more on his downfield blocking in Pittsburgh's run-heavy offense, and definitely put the team ahead of himself. The rehabilitation of his persona and newfound maturity haven't translated into Burress moving to the front burner of teams looking to heat up their passing attack, though.

Rockin: Giants declined to not to enter in the Burress sweepstakes simply because Burress is not Coughlin's type of player and person. That's sad considering the Giants need a legitimate receiver that Eli could use as his blanket.

while its true that he isnt coughlin's type of player, its also true that many teams are also put off by the amount of money he is seeking. Me thinks he has severely overstated his value.

Burress to visit Winter Park
Last Update: 3/10/2005 3:39:50 PM

KFAN Dot Com

Free-agent receiver Plaxico Burress was on his way to the Twin Cities on Thursday afternoon, the FAN has learned.

Burress, considered the top receiver available in free agency, met with the Giants earlier this week but did not come to terms on a contract.

The Vikings are looking for a receiver to start along side Nate Burleson, replacing the departed Randy Moss.

The Vikings remain interested in trading to fill holes at wide receiver and safety, but first they’ll examine two free-agent options when Plaxico Burress and Darren Sharper visit Winter Park on Friday.

Love the Burress talk dont know about the Sharper. He has been hurt a bit but still would be a upgrade over Russell...

Despite his public denials of wrongdoing, Mike Tice admitted to NFL security investigators Tuesday that he scalped some of his tickets to last month’s Super Bowl, according to an Internet report published late Thursday.

"I probably shouldn't have sold my tickets," Tice said. "I made a mistake. I regret it. I'll never do it again. I'm going to be in trouble. I'll probably get slapped with a big fine."

"I sold some of my tickets this year," he told SI.com. "I did. I told the league that and I told [team owner] Red McCombs that. I'm not going to lie. But if I'm going to be thrown out this year for selling tickets, then I'm a scapegoat.

Should be fined along with finding out everyone in the NFL who did this and fine them the same amount.

No deal for Burress; Sharper arrives
Last Update: 3/11/2005 9:36:58 PM

KFAN dot com

As Plaxico Burress prepared to leave Winter Park without a contract, free-agent safety Darren Sharper arrived in the Twin Cities late Friday afternoon.

Sharper, an eight-year veteran released by Green Bay on Thursday, had dinner with members of the coaching staff Friday night and is scheduled to watch film and meet with coach Mike Tice on Saturday.

According to a source familiar with the situation, Sharper essentially is set upon playing for the Vikings in 2005. The only question remains the length and structure of a contract.

Sharper, 29, would replace Brian Russell as the Vikings' starting free safety.

About 90 minutes after Sharper arrived, Burress departed Winter Park. And for the second time in two days, the free-agent receiver departed a meeting with an NFL team without a contract.

Burress, widely considered the best receiver still available, rejected a six-year, $24 million offer from the Giants on Thursday, and the club subsequently broke off talks. It’s unclear whether the Vikings made a formal offer to Burress, but all indications are they have no interest in signing Burress to a long-term deal.

Burress is expected to visit Philadelphia on Monday.

That is fine. Love to see the Sharper deal done and hope he can stay heathly. No biggie on Plex. I can see them trying to play up there hand but he wants to play for the VIkings.

DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!

The Minnesota Vikings signed veteran safety Darren Sharper to a four-year contract on Saturday.

Sharper, cut by the Green Bay Packers in a cost-cutting move earlier this week, started at free safety the last six seasons and ranks fifth in team history with 36 interceptions. He led the team with four interceptions last year and scored three defensive touchdowns.
"Darren is very excited to be going to Minnesota," agent Joel Segal told The Associated Press.

Veteran quarterback Brad Johnson will visit Winter Park on Monday, and the unrestricted free agent may be considered for the Vikings' vacant backup quarterback job behind Daunte Culpepper. The Vikings' No. 2 the last two years, Gus Frerotte, is set to meet with Denver Broncos officials Monday. Frerotte, a Broncos backup from 2000-01, maintains an offseason home in the Denver area.

If this team still had Moss on it I wouldnt want Johnson anywhere close to the Vikings. I feel with Moss you just need to just chunk it down the field but now with Moss gone and this team needing WR to work now and all of them together to get the job done I could see Johnson being a good fit for these guys.

In a move that essentially ends any lingering interest in Plaxico Burress, and probably means that the Minnesota Vikings will not trade for Washington Redskins starter Rod Gardner, the Vikings on Tuesday afternoon reached a contract agreement with unrestricted free agent wide receiver Travis Taylor.

A five-year veteran and former Baltimore Ravens first-round draft choice, Taylor likely will fill the No. 3 wideout spot, behind starters Nate Burleson and Marcus Robinson.

Contract details were not immediately available.

Johnson will get a four-year contract worth $6 million with a $1.2 million signing bonus, his agent Philip Williams said.

He will replace Gus Frerotte, who signed with Miami earlier in the week. Johnson will serve as the backup to Daunte Culpepper.

Williams said about six teams expressed serious interest in Johnson, but in the end his history with the Vikings played a big role in his decision.

The New York Jets traded middle linebacker Sam Cowart to the Minnesota Vikings on Friday for a seventh-round pick in this year's draft.

Cowart saw his playing time diminish in 2004 after a knee injury knocked him out for an extended period and rookie Jonathan Vilma emerged as a standout player. After the season, Cowart asked for a trade when it became clear he wouldn't have much of a role with the Jets.

The move to Minnesota reunites him with defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, who coached him in Buffalo and New York, along with former Bills teammates Antoine Winfield, Pat Williams, Keith Newman and Ken Irvin.

What an offseason for the Purple. Probably the best and most eventful in quite some time. While it stinks to see Randy go, it's good to see the franchise spending money with a new owner. I like the veterans that we are getting in Sharper, Cowart, Brad Johnson, Travis Taylor, and etc.

I would love to ge Rod Gardner, but I can live with Mike Williams as the draft pick.

The reality of the Vikings trading WR Randy Moss is they got a lot more than LB Napoleon Harris and a first-round pick, which is what the Raiders gave them. Trading Moss freed up $22 million in salary over the next three years, and the Vikings subsequently went on a free-agent spending spree. Now, over the next three years, the Vikings will pay free-agent S Darren Sharper $10 million and free-agent DT Pat Williams $13.5 million. So one way to look at it is the Vikings have Harris, Sharper, Williams and the seventh pick in the draft instead of Moss. . . .

With the free agent spending I can live with this deal now!!!!!

Continuing a defensive overhaul, the team traded for Jets MLB Sam Cowart and immediately installed him as a starter. Cowart, a trusted veteran confidant of defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, will provide much-needed stability in a key leadership position. Cowart is not the playmaker he once was for Cottrell in Buffalo, but the team preferred him over the unpredictable and unreliable E.J. Henderson. While Henderson is capable of covering more ground and making more plays than Cowart, he spent most of 2004 making mental mistakes. Henderson could not get himself lined up correctly, let alone his teammates, and too often covered the wrong man in pass coverage. In Cowart, the team hopes to get a contribution similar to that which Greg Biekert provided in 2002 and 2003: A steadying presence who uses veteran guile to overcome diminishing skills. . . .

Love the deal and hope this could help Henderson.

I read also that Henderson could win the job and they will move Cowart to the outside to help Henderson on the field also.

WR Travis Taylor wanted desperately to sign with the team after WR Randy Moss was traded, and Taylor finally got his wish. Taylor figures as the team's No. 3 receiver behind Nate Burleson and Marcus Robinson. Coaches see Taylor as a strong slot receiver, with enough strength to push past linebackers and safeties.

Speaking to receiver prospects last month at the NFL scouting combine, Vikings coach Mike Tice posed the same question.

"I said, 'I have an opening now...,' " Tice said Wednesday. "I wanted to see their facial expressions and body language when I told them we had an opening at the position. Certainly a number of them answered it in a way that made me feel pretty good about it."

I know Mark has said that the Vikings might draft a RB in this draft with this pick and I think I might be thinking he might be right...

It seems Tice always throws out some misdirection things to get people to think they are going one way and then go the total other way....

Durango53
03-28-2005, 05:02 PM
The Vikings appear relatively committed toward starting second-year player Dontarrious Thomas at weakside linebacker. Thomas struggled last season as a rookie.

"He has a tremendous amount of speed and is a smart young man," Tice said. "If we are going to go with any young guy, we've decided he's the guy. He's got the makeup speed. If he makes a mistake, he's fast enough to make up for it."

Tough one for me on E.J. or Thomas. Both have some speed but Thomas looked worse than E.J. this year. But I think both will get better with bringing in some vets to help them out instead of a coach just telling them what to do and them trying to figure it out on the field...

Durango53
03-28-2005, 05:16 PM

Ok how about some draft talk....

I think the Vikings now take Cedric Benson or Mike Williams.

I dont think Derrick Johnson is going to be at 7. I see him going in the 3rd to the Browns.

And I dont think the Vikings are done trading yet. I still see one of the RB's getting delt. And if that is the case the Vikings will get a RB that can carry the load and so I could see them getting Cedric Benson. If no deal is done with the one of the running backs then I see them going for Mike Williams if he is still there.

Timberwolf
03-31-2005, 03:59 PM

We better get either Mike or Derrick in this draft.

I am already worried that Mike Williams could be gone too.

Durango53
03-31-2005, 04:08 PM
Derrick will be long gone. He will be a Brown so that Romeo can run his 3-4 with some speed and playmakers at LB.

There should be a WR but there are many good WR in this draft so I am not that worried about it. But the Vikings never talk about who they draft. But they do talk about other guys out there and act like they want to draft them. That is why I dont see them drafting a WR just because they have been talking about it.

I am thinking they will still try to swing a deal with Bennett and draft one of the RB's in this draft.
I dont like the move but think that is what they will do.

Timberwolf
03-31-2005, 04:22 PM
That would be so stupid to get a RB. We already have enough. I am happy with what they got in Onterrio, Mwelde, and Moe. We really need a WR who will be reliable. We need someone to fill Randy's shoes.

Durango53
03-31-2005, 04:26 PM
I feel they will try to trade a RB and if they are able to trade one then they will draft one. If they cant trade a RB then they would go with a WR.

It is well rumored that they want to trade one and so with that they would go after one that is more durable then Bennett and Moore and wont have the drug problem of Smith.

Best GM/Front Office — Minnesota Vikings
I praise the Vikings for being bold. Mike Tice saw he couldn't win the big games with Randy Moss, which led to a major shakeup in personnel.

While I am not normally a fan of spending money in free agency for the sake of big names, I like how Minnesota attacked the off-season. They already have a solid core of young players on both sides of the ball, which made it the right time to bolster the roster for a NFC title run.

Defensive end Pat Williams will be a strong complement to linemate Kevin Williams along the front four. Cornerback Fred Smoot and safety Darren Sharper give the Vikings a lot of credibility and matchup potential in the secondary. As a result, the Vikings will become a better defense against the run and display more consistency in the secondary. That gives the Vikings more balance across the board.

Now the pressure is on Mike Tice to lead this team to the NFC championship game.

Because he is so effective in his limited role, the team has given no thought toward including RB Moe Williams in its training camp competition for the starting running back job. Coach Mike Tice believes that Williams, who will turn 31 this summer, has a tendency to wear down as the season progresses. One of the reasons is that Williams runs so hard and with such abandon that he is a bruised mess after each game. Although he is the team's most reliable runner, Tice does not believe it is realistic to use Williams on an every down basis throughout 16 games. As a result, Williams will continue to fill his third-down role -- with his repetitions increasing as the playoffs draw near -- in 2005. . . .

I have to agree with this. I can see Moe being a huge guy to get the ball to in the playoffs.

The decision to re-sign C Cory Withrow did not generate much attention, but it is a key offseason move. Withrow is a five-year backup to Pro Bowl C Matt Birk, but he also has the ability to play either guard position and his versatility is important on game day. Because he can play guard, coaches can comfortably enter games with only seven active offensive linemen. That gives the team an extra game-day roster spot for another position.

A must to get this guy resigned after letting him go. He filled in great for Birk when Birk did go down.

OL Mike Rosenthal missed 14 games in 2004 after suffering a Lisfranc fracture of his right foot. The injury came soon after the team had committed to him as its long-term answer at RT; a strong offseason of weight training last spring led to an outstanding training camp prior to the injury. Coaches are looking forward to having his veteran presence back, and they believe the weight gain to 315 pounds he achieved in the spring of 2004 will serve him well in 2005. Rosenthal might not be ready for the first day of minicamp April 29, but he should be 100 percent healed by the start of training camp.

How much did this hurt the Vikings for a bit. I ton until Goldberg (the Wyoming boy :D ) stepped up and got his shot and filled in nice for Mike and earned a starting job as a guard which will fit him nice. But Mike being strong and heatly will be huge.

Vikings re-signed QB Shaun Hill to a one-year, $656,000 contract. The restricted free agent will remain No. 3 on the Minnesota depth chart in 2005.

Mike Tice hinted that he may select a receiver in the draft, and acknowledged that the Vikings are not through rebuilding their receiving core, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. However, the St. Paul Pioneer Press more recently reported that Tice isn't favoring any one position as the draft approaches. The Vikings own the 18th pick in the first round. ... The Pioneer Press reports that drafting a running back isn't out of the question for the Vikings, but they already have a stable of other running back, which makes this sentiment seem unlikely.

The Vikings have pre-draft visits set up with five players starting Monday. They are:

Braylon Edwards, WR, Michigan

Projected as the top receiver in the draft and possible No. 1 overall selection. Caught 182 passes for 29 touchdowns during his last two seasons with the Wolverines.

Carnell "Cadillac" Williams, RB, Auburn

Possible top-five pick. Rushed for 2,372 yards and 29 touchdowns during his final two seasons for the Tigers after suffering season-ending injuries in 2001 and '02.

Adam "Pac-Man" Jones, CB, West Virginia

One of the top two cornerbacks in the draft with Miami's Antrel Rolle. Led the Mountaineers with 76 tackles last season while doubling as a kickoff and punt returner.

Erasmus James, DE, Wisconsin

Had eight sacks last season after sitting out the 2003 campaign because of a hip injury. Durability concerns could drop him to the lower half of the first round.

Justin Tuck, DE, Notre Dame

Pure pass rusher who had a school-record 13½ sacks in 2003 but dropped off to six last season, thanks in part to a nagging knee injury. Weak against the run, and durability is a concern.

When it comes to the Vikings, the NFL schedulemaker obviously doesn’t believe in holidays off.

Last season, it was a Christmas Eve game against Green Bay.

The 2005 schedule, released Wednesday, concludes with a Christmas Night game at Baltimore and a New Year’s Day home date against Chicago.

Ho-ho-ho!

The Baltimore game is one of two prime-time contests for the Vikings, who also have a Monday night date at Green Bay on Nov. 21.

Other notable games include the Sept. 11 regular-season opener against Tampa Bay and former Vikings defensive tackle Chris Hovan at the Metrodome, an Oct. 2 date at Atlanta and the Oct. 23 home game against Green Bay.

The Vikings play three of their first five games on the road, sandwiched around a Week 5 bye.

They play four of their last six at home, including three of the last four.

"We're very excited about the schedule," coach Mike Tice said in a statement. "I love the way it lays out."

The Vikings and the agent for Sam Cowart agreed to significantly reduce the length and value of the veteran linebacker’s contract before the team added him in a trade with the New York Jets last month, sources confirmed Wednesday.

Cowart, acquired March 18 in exchange for one of the Vikings’ two seventh-round draft picks, had three years and $9 million in base salary (including $1.5 million in 2005) remaining on the five-year contract he signed with the Jets in 2003.

Great
This guy is a great team guy it looks like and I hope he helps this team out a ton and can play his way to a bigger contract next year!!!!!!!!

Kampman, a three-year veteran out of Iowa, started all 16 games at left end last season and set career highs with 67 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Terms of the Vikings’ offer were not disclosed. If the Packers don’t match it within seven days, they’ll receive a fifth-round draft choice as compensation.

It looks like the Vikings are setting up a good D-Line that can mix and match to the offense and the down they are playing.

The Vikings have re-signed veteran kicker Jose Cortez to a one-year, $455,000 deal. Cortez, who spent time with the Vikings as a kickoff specialist for parts of the last two seasons, averaged 63.9 yards per kickoff (36.9 net) with one touchback in eight games in 2004. Dan Orner, re-signed in January and allotted to NFL Europe, is not kicking in the developmental league and no longer is under contract with the Vikings.

WHAT THE HELL ARE THE VIKINGS THINKING!!!!!! :eviltongu

Draft a freaking kicker. Quit signing these stiffs off the street!!!! Just burn a draft pick on a kicker in college. See if you can get that guy out of Ohio in the 3rd or some other kicker.

Vikings are too cheap to draft a kicker.

Durango: So what's the word on who we are drafting? I am guessing we are going after Edwards or Mike Williams. I want Mike Williams.

I dont know. I have been hearing all kinds of rumors but nothing from Vikings camp. Not a peep. I would want Edwards over Williams. I am kind of getting scared of Williams. I have been hearing things of how he will be like MeShawn in his play with speed and such.

But still wouldnt be suprized if they pick a RB and a WR in the second.

DRAFT WHISPERS: The team again will target a limited number of positions at the top of the draft and take a wide-open approach later. Some strong free-agent signings have left wide receiver as the team's biggest need; someone must replace WR Randy Moss as a downfield threat. The running game will receive more attention, but the team will continue to take advantage of QB Daunte Culpepper's arm. With two of the top 18 picks, the team has a terrific chance to move up or down in the draft, and receiver availability will drive such decisions.

TARGETING: The team would love to add a strong receiver, and Michigan's Braylon Edwards or Southern California's Mike Williams could be available when the team picks at No. 7 overall. Edwards fits the team's need for a big downfield threat and impressed coaches at the Combine. Williams is bigger but slower than Edwards, and his 4.6 speed has made some wonder whether he should be considered a vertical threat. South Carolina's Troy Williamson is an intriguing possibility. He's big enough to fight defensive backs for the ball, and his 4.32 sp
